Yea, ignore it, hit the button and resume Crossfiring.

Sadly, it's a reminder of how old Freelancer really is... There is a a fix out there for it from what I understand that Louva-Deus at the EOA Players Consortium has been working on over the years,(now part of the Quick Fix addon/update for Freelancer) adding graphics card manufacturer IDs to the Freelancer graphics card database files so it would "recognize" newer, more modern cards. Apparently though I'm gonna assume OP has a workaround in place for Crossfire, as this error/message/flag from Freelancer does not affect it.

Yes Hellraiser, you have new strafe controls (up and down)as well as the barrel roll controls, activate barrel roll, roll clockwise and roll counterclockwise, albiet they can only be used out of mouse flight control, i.e. cruise mode/autopilot mode. I believe they are not assigned to any keyboard keys intially once you've installed the mod and fired up Crossfire for the first time, therefore they need to be assigned to keys to use them.

    Hey Bullwinkle! Thanks! :D

Nothing special, just the same ole' mouse n' keyboard like most Freelancers. :D However, my keyboard layout and mouse button assignments are a little different than stock, I utilize a 5-button MS mouse though, as it helps with my weapons loadout. I treat my controls on Freelancer alot like I do my controls for first person shooters, mouse handles pointing/shooting/weapons, the keyboard handles moving, manuveuring, items, etc, etc., the only exception is that the keyboard also controls my weapons grouping.(more on that later...)

Basically, my setup is like this, I'm usually in "engine kill" mode when in combat,(my D key) therefore my left hand on the keyboard handles all afterburner/axis thrustering aka "strafeing"(left, right, up and down, just like the Q,W,E, S keys for most FPS shooters controls) and reverse/full stop thrusting. (A key) Since in engine kill mode, the afterburner(TAB key) is my main directional thruster, however I can still do crazy directional thrustering(with Q, W, E, S keys) all at once while still floating in space in another direction due to engine kill. Now from time to time, almost all the ships in the game will drop out of engine kill at some point and I have to re-engage it mind you. But once you learn how to "vector thrust" while in engine kill mode with a very fast, quick turning nimble ship(like the Shroud equipped with the weight reducer for example) you will quickly become a VERY hard target to hit and easily outmanuveur almost all NPCs and even some human pilots, save skilled human pilots. ;):D

Now that you mention it, I am a little bit surprised that there is no sticky thread with tips for newbies. That would be a great place to answer a lot of the common questions that I see.

Indeed, there are alot of resources out on the net Bullwinkle, but none of them really focuses on the expanded controls of Crossfire 1.8 and how to utilized advanced piloting techniques available with those expanded controls either.

Perhaps I'll break down and try to write something with input from anybody willing to contribute as a good piloting "primer" for n00bs to Crossfire in the future when I've got some free time to do so.

In any case, moves like that are only likely to fool a human pilot -- and only the first couple of times. The NPCs have inhuman reaction times (because, well, they're not human).

Not necessarily Bullwinkle, barrel rolls make a craft a very difficult target to hit, because in some cases, the center of the craft is constantly moving along with the exterior parts utilizing the most movement, this is all of course if you're in a aft position of the target which is usually the case when I see this in-game with NPC targets. Every time I've had a lock on a NPC while they were in a barrel roll from a distance, I've always scored less direct hits, every time, so the technique has merit, albiet only in the use of trying to flee your enemy IMHO. Since currently the barrel roll can only be used while out of mouse flight mode, i.e. typically in cruise mode, it only makes sense it would be used when you're trying to get the hell out of Dodge anyway!

Yes, Freelancer would greatly benefit from some additional controls/improved controls/horizion indicator to make barrel rolls more useful. Yes, again, for now the barrel roll's only real use is when you're trying to evade and flee while charging your cruise engines to escape! If I wanted to evade fire more effectively but stay in the fight, I'd stick to my previous engine kill and thrust vectoring as mentioned above. With the right ship and use of engine kill/thrust vectoring, I can outmaneveur most targets before they can even put a target reticle on me.

As the wise Mr. Myagi once said, "The best way to block punch is to no be there."

I use the scroll wheel on my mouse to control engine speed (when I am not sliding).

There are other ways to do this too Bullwinkle, like using left or right strafe to slow down quickly or using reverse thrust to stop instantly. Usually I'm always in "engine kill" mode with normal Newtonian space physics/intertia using the afterburner to chase targets and hitting the L/R strafe to slow down and get a bead on them when they hit the brakes or in some cases use engine reverse to pummel them when up close and they are moving very slow trying to use evading movements. The only drawback to that though is you better have some good shields or a good wingman to keep other hostiles from destroying you while you're attacking thier wingman all while you're effectively at a dead stop in space.

Regardless, there really needs to be a good "Freelancer Crossfire 1.8 Flying for Dummies" guide out here somewhere for rookie pilots on how to best use thier controls to do some fancy flying on Freelancer and utilize better dogfighting manuvers in space, since Crossfire has a new set of controls at a pilot's disposal, like the new up and down strafe and roll controls, clockwise and counter-clockwise. Since I was never taught these things, I had to figure them out the hard way, learn on my own and discover them, which has taken effectively 5-6 years of playing Freelancer to figure them out LOL! :D There also needs to be told how to use the L/R strafe, afterburner, thrust, engine kill, engine reverse controls effectively as well. I won't even get into using the weapons/weapons groupings and some techniques I employ with them here as well... Personally, I'm still trying to figure out how to best utilize the barrel roll to evade a huge hostile wing of fighters. I see NPCs doing it all the time trying to fake fleeing in a dogfight only to turn around and making a offensive run and it definately makes them a tough target to hit when they barrel roll.

    To all new pilots:

IMHO the best way to survive Altair is to learn the mechanics of flying your ship, it's controls, how to dogfight more effectively, then get the best gear you can find/afford to be most effective. Even the best gear in this game is no substitute for poor flying ability, focus on your skills first! Hope this helps!

There are better ways to skin a cat my good Awesomeman. :D Personally, I only fight battles I know I can win, with other situations, I subvert, manipulate or distract while I do a "tactical reverse". ;):D:D:D

Better to leave these fools to thier own demise than them draggin us all down with them together.

Very expose' Fire Wolf, thanks for the low-down and good information to pass around to all SWAT and CF pilots here.

My thoughts on this over the past few days have changed after some thought and now, from the information Fire Wolf has brought forth my perspective has changed.

I say let the little /v/ bros have thier server and let them keep anything else they wanna steal from "data" wise if it's not feasable to keep them from stealing it. If this is the means to keeping them and their ilk away from the respectable servers and from causing any problems to the Freelancer community as a whole, it's a small price to pay. As Fire Wolf has stated and from my own observations, these are not people to give any fuel to thier own "fire". They are attention seekers, they love to be baited from outside influences to thier /b/ subculture and drawing any attention to them will only embolden them and eventually illicite a response from them against respective Freelancer communities, like SWAT.

Leave them to thier little server, cut them off at every attempt into the Freelancer community and let them starve themselves into boredom and eventual abandonment of Freelancer itself as Fire Wolf has stated.

if there's a legal route to take, i would use that first. just my two cents.
    -PipeHitter.

    Freakin this.

I assume all SWAT stuff is copywrited and will hold up in hopefully ANY court of law, regardless of country OP. Apparently it's time to find SWAT a good copywrite lawyer and a send 4chan a nice, all legaese-like CEAST AND DESIST court order telling to effectively stop using any SWAT created/copywrited material in "/v/lancer" or get sued for copywrite violations/theft of material/damages to the extent of the law.

Hmmm, this ship if it exists in 1.8 it could be anywhere, it's definately not in the 1.7 database. Knowing OP (creator of this mod) it's probably hidden well within one of the newer systems and most likely, a hostile, possibly alien one.(or at least initially haha, hopefully there is a rep fix) :D I'll keep an eye out for it Guardian Angel and relay it's location if found. Once I get my "scout" ship really to explore Sirius and Altair, I'll definately be exploring more to get my 1.8 database up to snuff with the new systems, ships and gear I've come across so far.

Firebird76, without going to particular details, IMHO the quickest way to gain cash on here is to do missions(that aren't over your head so to speak, get you blown to pieces in space) and slaughter pirate faction fighters for their escape pod(the pilots) and sell those back to various prisons around Sirius for big $$$.

As for the actual equipment on hand and/or best ships,(granted my knowledge is limited to CF 1.7 era, but I'm finding new stuff every day) ask around or give me a PM in game if you see me on the server and I'll tell you exactly where and what you need to do.

Good flying, good hunting and good fortune to you in your travels Freelancer, hope to see you in space. 8)

Well, it may download faster NOW, but more sites or download "seeds" if you will, are always more effective at wide-spread file distribution, especially one of this size. The more people who are downloading off the SWAT server, the slower everyone's d/l rate will become, this is a matter of bandwidth, of which I'm sure the SWAT server has a good deal of though. But I'm always for the more, the merrier when it comes to file hosting, mirrors are a god-send, especially if you're not in Europe, of which I assume this is where that server is based.(and I'm in the US  )

I'll give it a shot this afternoon and see if I can finally get the file downloaded. :]

Is there any way somebody can seed the installer over a bit-torrent? The download server seems to have choked on the file...

Surely there are other places to host such a massive download more effectively IMHO, namely through bit-torrent methinks.

GrandAndreasK, I'd second KhohnJao's advice, however, I'll give you some pointers in the Altair sector...

My best piece of advice is to take a fast, manuverable ship as a "scout" and explore the entire Altair sector as best you can. This is so you can dodge all the Dom K'vash and massive numbers of Nomads you'll encounter in the Altair sector.

In most cases with the Nomads in high numbers or even most Dom K'vash, I'd recommend cruising out of their way if you come across them. I have been able to tackle an entire wing of some 8-10 Nomads by myself and even two Dom K'vash Gunboats on a rare occassion. However, anything more than that and you just asking to get blown out of the sky unless you're in a battleship like the Osiris. Your first priority is to survive and map, suicide missions can come later IMHO. :D

If you think you're skilled enough, try to find some black boxes in the Dom K'vash systems, albiet they are very difficult to get to and getting back to Coalition space with them in one piece is even harder. If you do find all three, you'll find the ultimate secret of the Dom K'vash anyway. (and God help you then haha! You'll see what I mean...)

In the Coalition controlled space of the Altair sector, you are relatively safe due to the Coalition patrols. However you will most likely still come across lone DK Gunboats occassionally, which have incredible forward fixed firepower and are slow moving/turning. Use these facts to your advantage(again a nimble ship is the key here, save the massive armor and firepower of a capital ship) and always keep an eye out on your radar for them in Coalition space.

If you happen to catch me on the server sometime, feel free to hit me up and I'll show you the ropes out there and maybe give you a free tour, if time permits. Good journey, take care and I'll see you out in space dewd. 8)

If you see me on the server sometime Acegard, I'll take you anywhere or find you anything in this mod you want to go to, in either the Sirius or Altair sectors, providing we have the necessary time. 8) I'll also provide you with as many maps and data you want about this mod.

Welcome to Crossfire and hope to see ya in space. [w00t]
