  • So... I'm new to your mod.

I've been trying to get it to sync up correctly on both of my computers here, and I have a friend cross-country that is trying to do the same. We have had no luck at all.

We wiped all previous Freelancer files of any type

    We freshly installed Freelancer

We freshly installed Freelancer Mod Manager 1.31

We installed Crossfire 1.7 (I assume that is your most recent mod version?)

    We installed Crossfire 1.7a

    Problems -
None of the 4 computers... 2 of mine, or two of his, will connect with any sort of update server. So it doesn't allow multiplayer. If you try to access it from inside the game itself, it simply crashes.

Other than going through your entire forum, post by post, I figured I would simply be direct, and ask. We enjoy your mod in single player, and unless you have a better version of the same mod, or a similar mod, that works for both single player, and multi player, we'd simply like to pass the server check, and play.

    Can anyone help, please?

    4. download and install FLMM v1.31, not 1.4 its incompatible.
    5. download FRESH COPY of CF 1.7 and 1.7a patch
    6. activate CF 1.7, leave the patch for now.
    7. install Freelancer.
    8. activate CF 1.7 in FLMM
    8. install the CF 1.7a patch
    9. launch Freelancer from FLMM
    10. deactivate 3D sound ingame options - Audio.
    11. get online and enjoy

change point 5: "download FRESH COPY of CF 1.7"
change point 6: "activate CF 1.7"
point 8a stays, point 8b is obsolete now
change point 11: "check if launcher version is V1.54 (launcher title bar) before entering the server - get online and enjoy "

after all that is done lauch multiplayer to the global server page, then exit the game and relaunch. the launcher will automatically update to v1,55

  • So... I followed the instructions to the letter.

    Same problem.

    I uninstalled absolutely everything.

I downloaded a new crossfire, and FLMM

    I installed FLMM

I opened the patch, but didn't activate it in FLMM

    I installed Freelancer

    I activated the patch

I opened Freelancer with FLMM (the multiplayer button was not clickable), and disable the 3D audio.

I quit, and re-opened the launcher.

Still version 1.54.... and no option to click the multiplayer button.

I'm not sure what is wrong O_o I would guess that it was the XP-64 that I'm running, but that's being run in compatability mode, and it's doing the same thing on my other computer.

When the launcher opens up, it displays for a moment that it's 'Downloading patchrules' Then it flashes a file path. Then it immediately says 'Crossfire updates not found... only single player available'.

    o_O

  • I am no expert with these kind of things (I've had trouble installing many times in the past) dopple and hagar's instructions are very good. but you must follow them correctly. note the amendments at the bottom to the list of 1 - 11. it makes the instructions read as follows:

    1. deactivate all mods in FLMM.
    2. uninstall FLMM
    3. uninstall Freelancer, deleting all saved game data and screenshots.
    4. download and install FLMM v1.31, not 1.4 its incompatible.
    5. download FRESH COPY of CF 1.7
    6. activate CF 1.7

    10. deactivate 3D sound ingame options - Audio.
11.check if launcher version is V1.54 (launcher title bar) before entering the server - get online and enjoy "

after all that is done lauch multiplayer to the global server page, then exit the game and relaunch. the launcher will automatically update to v1,55

the patch is obsolete. (at point '6' you are not activating cf in flmm, more like open/unzip/run)

If I am wrong, someone please correct me :)

  • So... I'm going to number this, to help alleviate confusion.

This was my previous post, numbered.

I don't mean to be a pain ^_^ I guess it's one of those 'hopeless patient' sorts of things.

I run a very clean setup of XPx64. I don't have anything excessive or intrusive running in the background on this computer, or my other.

I downloaded both FLMM and the Crossfire 1.7 from Lancers Reactor.

When I browse through the launcher that comes up, I end up finding a lot of dead links, and coding... I don't know if that is because of the coding/server, or if something I have running is getting in the way.

It seems like I'm 9/10ths of the way there, if I could simply figure out what is stopping my computer from connecting to the server, and patching that last step.

    Any suggestions?

    Sorry to be a pain ^_^;;

And I truly do appreciate any and all suggestions.

  • No anti-virus. Too many extraneous processes.

I have the standard windows firewall, run all my web through Firefox (*though it looks as though your launcher opens up through IE?), and have windows defender installed, along with Spybot S&D.

Do any of those programs conflict with the process?

  • possible that they block ports or prevent the download of the update

  • what is the error number (like "[E1]") the launcher gives?

r u able to write any file into your freelancer path?

PS: for a complete list of Crossfire Launcher Error Codes check Here

PPS: the launcher needs a working IE installation, as its using some IE functions.

  • Error E4

I didn't think about this before, but does Freelancer and/or Crossfire need to be downloaded specifically to the C:/ drive?

I don't run my computers like that, and they are downloaded to a drive set aside for games and media.

I am going to also experiment with taking the Spybot S&D TeaTimer off... it's a lot like ZoneAlarm, and I'm not sure, but maybe therein lies the problem.

Oh... and yes, I have write/modify rights. My comp. ^_^

Thanks again for the feedback... this is a zinger.

yes, some ppl said that they couldn't run freelancer from any other drive than C, but i could never verify this myself (make a test and install everything to the C drive)

sure if u use admin rights when logged on, but if u log on as user u need to get rights for the program files path (or better only for the freelancer path in the program files directory)

  • are u sure that you have the full version of freelancer and NOT the demo? Then cf wouldn't work right and multiplayer button would be grey, because mp is disabled in the demo

  • Quite positive on the 'full version' bit. I've been playing multiplayer on the Reballance 3.5 for a few months now.... it's just a slightly screwy mod ^_^

It's re-install time... I'm going to try disabling literally everything, and trying this again.

    We'll see if it work.

    ~ ~ ~

    Okay... a few questions.

There is no way to manually patch this, correct?

Second question... is there a specific port that the launcher uses? If so, I can try and free it up....

Third.... okay... so maybe there wasn't a third.

    ^_^;;

  • whats with old saved games? they must be deleted for this mod or?

ensure that you have all rights to write into the path and that the launcher also has the access rights to write into the freelancer path.

  • Is there a specific method of making sure that a program has writing access? I know how to monitor programs that might get in the way, or block it... but not how to pro actively make sure that a program has access.

  • open the windows explorer and try to copy a file into the freelancer path. if that works, then u have the necessary rights on this user account. all that is left to do: make sure the launcher starts on the same user account

did u try that installation to C drive already?

  • Unfortunately, I don't have the room on the C drive to install anything of the sort. I set that drive up specifically to be able to hold Windows and it's base components... and nothing more. It helps quite a bit with security.

And yes... I can write to any and all files.

Other than the windows Firewall in the way, I'm out of ideas.

  • --> Same configuration for my harddrive c:

My freelancer isn't installed at harddrive C:
Don't have any clue why this should be necessary... It works from from another than c drive at my pc.

So your firewall will block the updates - can this be verified?
Do you want to use the network connection from another computer? Or direct connected to internet?

Does the connection works to the update server? You can try to type the adress http://www.swat-portal.de/CFupdates/Index.html within the iexplore.exe (internet explorer :)

May any setting from internet explorer be causing such problem (dunno exactly - but can this be possible)?

  • yep, my personal experience say that FL can be installed on other drives, but i remember some ppl that said they could only run it on C

did u check your IE installation? try any download from any site using IE for a test...

  • Okay... Internet explorer displays the site just fine.

I think the C vs E drive is a mute point.

What does the multiplayer update really change, and why am I unable to make that change without doing it actively from the server?

I've checked to make sure... I have write access, there is nothing like a firewall or antivirus blocking server access.

    I'm not sure what else I can actually do. Without a separate update, or a way to manually update, I think I may be out of luck. ^_^;;
