Singleplayer AI nanobot/shieldbot balance

  • Hey all,

Longtime Freelancer player here. Just started the Crossfire 1.9 Mod a few days ago. Since the beginning of the game I've been having serious problems killing enemies. It got easier after the first few missions but has again spiked. I'm around level 10 and 11, have a CF ship that beats anything in normal Freelancer, and decent weapons. I just recently got in a fight with 4 Corsairs and was only able to kill 2 of the 4 over a period of about 6 minutes. They just keep using the darn nano/shield bots too quickly, and seemingly with unlimited supply. Is there a way to change the files for this? It's seriously impacting my SP enjoyment. Like I said I've played Freelancer before so I know how to get on my targets and stick with em. I'm just sick and tired of watching their wings and hulls get blown to hell and then completely recover their shields and hull strength. It seems a bit ridiculous. Please let me know if there are any solutions. I've looked through the forums and haven't been able to find anything yet.

  • Hi mate, and welcome arround :)

The NPCs don't have unlimited supplies, it is just that low level NPCs only use 1-10 batts/botts per repair, and with a normal stock they can repair many times, counting they use 1 by 1 (I actually want to have that option sometimes :D )

Though, the game is kept as balanced for normal gamers, and not many had such problems with the NPCs(but you ar enot the first :) ). Yes they can be harder and take longer to kill, but the vanilla equipment and ships are outdated now, there are better ones, so there will also be harder NPCs arround soon. You also have to start thinking which kind of equipment setup fits your style, more missiles , or more guns as they don't get "out of ammo", etc.

This feature will not change, as it keeps things kind of hard, as how things should be. You can also use battsb/botts, it is just fair to let NPCs use them as well, have your same hull/shields, options, and also they have better and faster moves, so harder to target/hit them.

So, you should just try it harder, it will worth the work when you get further in the storyline :)

  • Alright I'll keep at it. Does the FAQ that's included with the mod go into details about some better weapons? From what I've gathered in-game I'm sporting the best weapons available in my sector. Each does about 130 hull 70 shield and i'm level 10-11. As mentioned I got a CF ship so I'm definitely fine in that respect. I hardly dent the energy drain with my weapons so I can't help thinking there are much better weapons out there I just haven't found them yet. Also, I don't do missiles. I always try in the beginning of each Freelancer runthrough and it never works out well for me.

  • Yes, there are much better guns, some are not even sold, but earnable at killing certain new alien races' ships.

There is also a FAQ on here though nothing similar to an in-gam ewalkthrough or such, but there are threads with usseful information about this topic. You can start with using the words in your title as keywords for a search.

  • Welcome to CF :)

Yes the start can be very hard when you aren't used to npcs that have these capabilities. As a long time freelancer player I'm sure you know that other systems have different weaps available than what you start with in NY. There are extra jumpholes that may lead you into more trouble and fun if you search around a bit. It's also worth remembering from original freelancer some of the places that free upgrades were available. If you get stuck you can always ask more here and there is alot of information accessable seaching the forums. Good luck pilot 8).

BTW, while it may seem hard at first....you might ( I know I did) really like the journey that you will have playing through CF

  • Yep, more like an adventure rather than killing ships in seconds and passing to the "next level" so fast, and end the fun fast...

  • Hey, welcome. You can also spend some time checking out the Lexicon for information on a lot of things. It resides in under the "Tools" header at the top of the page.

  • Longtime Freelancer player here

    Welcome m8!!!

Yup ship as titan, sabre, legionar is very hard to kill in CF even u have best of best guns. Remind me of the time when I first arrived in CF, in my defender took me 20-30 minute to kill one wing of titans :)

  • Thanks for all the help guys and gals. It's definitely quite a different experience than regular old freelancer. I'll admit I was trying to go through the motions as usual and that clearly isn't working. I upgraded to a CF ship that I found in a warship in Bretonia. It should hold me over for a while. I'm planning on breaking off of my main missions and going on a journey to X-308 (I think that's it). It seems to me that CF rewards exploration, which is great. I was definitely trying to run through the expanded single player to get to the additional content but I think I'll try and slow down and explore. I'll admit I haven't even been to any of the CF systems yet. Is there any sort of limitation that would hold me from exploring CF systems at this point in the game? FYI I'm about to kick that guys ass in a race in the Dublin system.

  • It's X-3043, and it's a good choice as from there you can go all arround Sirius, including a shortcut to Dublin (where you do the race with that guy).

There are some limitations to exploring while in the singleplayer, some closed gates, but you should still find a way in and out ^^
