Maybe with bigger surs its possible to directly determine the hit by accesing the triangle and not interpolating the hit point with difficult math. So maybe thatswhy a performance increasement.

there is no complicated math behind hit detection at all
surs are nothing else than a simplified 3d model of the original object that is used to minimize the calculations for the real object
digital anvil could have included a hit detection directly on the cmp or 3db files if they would have wanted but the benefit of surs was the simplified shape and poly reduction
in the end FL calculates hits just by HpFire hardpoint position, its orientation, the projectile speed and the 3d object crossing its waythe more polys the more is to calculate
it is quiet imaginable that the surs sushi used were extremely detailed (which on the other side is against the purpose of the surs)
very likely they were almost as big as the newly generated ones (but that is just an assumption)best example:
create a normal asteroid field on a server (displaying 50 asteroids on the screen)
50 roids x 20 polygons = 1000 polygons for sur detection of the field in close range
now fill it with 5000 roids and you will see that the server has much to calculatenormal FL surs have about 50-100 polygons... a sur with 200kb size (has about 2000 polygons -> at least my tries were based on that amounts for test reference)
for single objects this might work in FL... but as soon FL has to calculate several of these the performance will go down
just imagine a battle between 10 capital ships .... 20000 polys for hit detectionyou can use the generator if you want... but like i told you it would be best to reduce the poly count before exporting to obj
either you use one of the tools to do that... or you simply create a new sur model in ms3d using simple geometric forms (you still can use that generator with that newly created shape) -
stoopid Q : where can i find a tut for making SUR and 3db files ???
Thx

its our tutorial board
-
got a content encoding error... cant access either
-
well i guess it's normal : OP keeps his secret private
-
secret implies private, doesnt it?
-
it actually should work as its a public board
-
getting the same error again and again on different pcs... Encoding error... So no its not acessible
-
try again
-
works
