Long time ago alcander did this with his freelimits mod by doing some hex edits to the FL files. Removing parts of the F1 menu in freelancer.
question is what did he change to accomplish it and can it be done again
any ideas?

Sorry for being off topic: Removing F1 while in space would suck big time, imho, coz i'm much too lazy to always dock when i'm leaving or switching chars.

Thats exactly for what is meant Lucy - not to be able to switch the Chars.
I have two meanings here both have a pro and a contra.
Not able to F1 = bad for the long Runs to Hyperspace and bad for the big Stores in Clan Systems but perfect for the RP.
Able to F1 = bad for RP but good for Stores and Hyperspace.
I disagree with you on this one. Well I agree that it would be something of a pain to always have to dock before switching character but it would stop a lot of the dodgy things that go on. No wreck camping, smugglers not switching as soon as they see a cop on patrol (I presume pirates have a similar problem when traders see a rat in system), cap ships using F1 and then rejoining to restore there shields and so on.
I think it is a great idea, if it can be made to work.
yeah but your lazyness is not my prob
so lets stay on the topic
people can always alt tab and close CF via desktop or just quit with task manager
but then again removing F1 will be contraproductive to the "NO suicide by NPCs" especially when there are stronger npcs around such as GMG ASF/CSF Outcasts etc... and trust me, some people will use this as their advantage
other than that its good idea
this is no discussion round about the goods and bads of it
you had 2 years time for that (actually even longer)
this thread has one purpose... to find out how it can get done
probably i could try to start freelancer in windebug to and set a breakpoint to step through the code that i dont have. Well there will be Assembler - but unfortunate i have very limited knowledge of this code. That would be one way to find that out. Without any single knowlegde for what i have to look i could try to find it -> disadvantage that would take some time..
I also could look to flhook development to probably find it. Dunno - Heagar must know if this can be prohibited to with flhook.
further option - look for this guy and find out how he did it.
Try google
Ask at TSP
One of these options i guess would probably help to find it out
if i had an idea, i would have already posted here...
I had the same idea about hook and had a deep look but it isn´t supporting such a feature - also the iNet is giving very rare informations about the F1 kill.
Currently i am thinking about setting a policy but this would effect any active FL user installation and would require Admin rights when installing CF so, atm. no idea.

CF, like 99% of software, installs in Program Files, thus it asks for admin rights / UAC elevation
I have the original mod which did this change
there are 4 hex edited files
comparing them with vanilla ones might at least show what has been changed and then step by step those changes can be "reproduced"
problem is that to test this stuff a running vanilla FL server (with 1.1 patch) is required (and i can not run that on my system)

I don´t no anyhing about install procedures on vista and still the problem about other FL instances.
I can not provide a vanilly FL Server cause my Webserver is Ubuntu driven and the 2k Office Server is demilitarized but i would be able to test results on it and report them, even by videoreports.

What are the requirements to test this? Can i run it on my local drive - simulating a webserver?
I could also try to do those hex edits - if i would knew what and where i have to change it.
sure you can test it if you can set up a fl server and connect to it
the server has to be version 1.1
and then you only need to compare the files with a hex editor which has such a compare option
best would be to make a copy of the vanilla FL and applying the entire mod to it before you launch the server... then you connect and see if its actually working (the F1 block)
then you close the server and try to one of the mod files with a vanilla one
launch the server again and take a look if its still working
do that for all 4 files and you at least can find out which file has to be edited in order to get that work
next step would be to compare that file with a vanilla one and update the vanille file with the changes of the mod file until you found the correct hex value that we have to change for CF
thats the theory behind it
ok i give it a try this evening when i am back home, what mod do i have to use for it?
ill upload it and give you a link
I found a more easy solution, currently my F1 key is blocked in MP, tested some Minutes ago and is working in Singleplayer.
Want me to post it here or in 1.8 modding?
