Possible server change

    I was thinking about changing the CF server hardware again eventhough the last chance was just a year ago.


    Reason is pretty simple... I can get a more powerful server (5-10% performance increase) for less money. If that change is possible is something I dont know yet as I will need to convince the current host to release me from the current contract and give me a new one (the 3rd time meanwhile). I guess I will know more about this in about 1 month.


    The change itself wont take long... just a few hours downtime since the current software and settings can simply be transfered.


    If everything works well the saved money will be taken to cover the financial risk that i have to carry.
    -> if the server would shut down today I would need to pay the server for another year no matter if people are online and rent systems or not.
    As FL is an old game I simply put that money aside to cover the risk... of course the server will stay online for the community that year hosting other stuff (other games) until the contract runs out.


    So to sum up... you get a more powerful server and I have less to worry about.
    (and the host gets a new long term contract with me... until I decide that i want new hardware)

    If we get another and better server for less money than now than this is the best can happen.
    Do you know when the downtime will be - will there be another info if that gonna happen? Would be nice tho^^


    And we probably can get rid of unused stuff, old accounts e.g. (more than 3 years not played as example). Dunno there must be something that causes always lagg on the current server - but thats another topic but would be nice to have a clue what are the reasons for this...


    I cross my fingers the better contract can be established.

    Don't think about it for more them a minute. Go for the upgrade and the saving.


    OP, don't get me wrong. It's not my intention to complain. As a matter of fact I personally have difficulty putting into words the appreciation of your actions which are resulting in having this CF server and being able to play and interact with a bunch of other weird individuals.


    None the less curiosity drives me to ask why do you do this. I can't see you profiting financially from it in any way. Not like we the players are donating any funds that are worth while mentioning. The time it takes to keep it maintained and running must be pretty engaging and I am sure you could sell that time for a decent income.


    So if it is not secret and private I am asking if you wouldn't mind explaining.

    possible answers (all valid):
    1. because i can
    2. because nobody else is doing it
    3. because i once started and have a responsibility now
    4. i love to prove people wrong
    5. this community is cool
    6. i am able to show my skills and learn new ones
    7. I aim for world domination - no sorry that was a joke (but I have a weird feeling that the day will come that this gets quoted and used against me)




    I dont know when the server change will be... very likely at the end of a month when the old contract runs out (end of august maybe)... dunno but its the best guess i can make

    Not accepting is just another way to stay in control.


    But hey you don't need to justify yourself and besides I believe control freaks to be a positive force under most circumstances. Control freaks coordinate and channel the energy of many into a single driving force that sometimes has the capability to move mountains. Sort of miracle workers.
