Some mods contain 3d systems and many players requested such a stuff. But is that realistic?
Yes the Universe does have more than 2 dimensions. But still many structures are based physical processes which force those structures to develop in a 2 dimensional way.
Best example is the milkyway which is disc due to its rotation. Star systems are working in a similar way. A sun in the center and planets orbiting the sun.
Based on our own sol system we know that the planets are pretty much orbiting around the sun at the same degree. This alignment is based on the rotation of the entire sol system and its history of creation.
In my oppinion (as i can not fly out there to prove it) the physics of planetary creation can not be cheated which means that in other sol systems the same structure had to be created which in the end would mean that 3 dimensional systems do not really exist if those systems have not been disturbed.
The orbit of a planet can only be different fromt he other planets if another solar object had influence on that planet (eg. a giant asteroid which disturbed the original orbit)
The chance that a planet does orbit the sun on the same degee that the other planets have but have a "shifted height" is also unlikly since that would mean that the sol system has to have 2 gravimetrical cores.
Ok these are my thoughts about the topic... 3d systems are possible but extrem unlikely. So FL follows a realistic idea.
