Crossfire on Freelancer Wikipedia

  • due to my serious edit in freelancer development section on wikipedia by including discovery and cf mods, and besides freelancer page has a quite controlling observer/editor (yes, he's a pain) who was editing mods out, i managed to get crossfire mentioned on freelancer wikipedia page at the end.

both Jappalang, mentioned guy, and me played a game for hours editing each other posts, until Crossfire remained on topic at last. :) hopefully he will not delete it eventually, but i will be checking from time to time to see if he does. :)

i was interested into getting both discovery and cf on topics, since both won mod db competition for 2007, but he wasn't interested into letting discovery stay, since he believes in google search, lol.

hopefully, crossfire will stay. if anybody has nerves to go there and add some more info about mods, b free to do it, but beware what jappalang will make of ur text. [11]

  • well there is just one option - keep editing ^^

  • i don't know about him much, but from what my research showed i can say he is rather busy editor on wikipedia, mainly doing games - having written 80% of mom, the best older tbs game ever imho - as u can see on his user page. it seems he is guiding himself towards encyclopedic rules, and those r quite strict. still, info about mods goes with those rules too, it just seems that guy dislikes fans data or anything alike hovering on articles, so he keeps limiting it and editing it out... strange idea, but ppl r like that too, interested more into rigid ideas of rules and limitations, than freedom-alike mind-aspect.

anyway, i respect ur suggestion, op, but my goal was acquired, i wanted to include crossfire on the page. data may b limited, but i think it is a good start for anyone interested into trying freelancer mods out. ofc, i would like more info about mods, not just cf, but i don't have motivation to deal with a self-righteous person on continual basis, and i am aware he will edit any additional data just to keep his awards and quality guidance checked, thus showing that even an idea of starting sense-full debate on the topic will give no desired result.

ofc, there is always a solution of separate crossfire mod article page, having it linked to freelancer page, and i might be willing to make one, as soon as i read all the tutorials i need for doing such a task, thus not having jappalang take over again, as it might show. it may take a while, but if somebody has enthusiasm to do some of that work, plz start, and i will accompany u on the way to the goal.

btw, cf got hosted on many different sites lately, ppl. i even found a few articles on serbian pages dated in previous month about cf (use search, u will see), although they r just a translation from other gamers' net sources. it seems that winning the top 100 on moty 2007 made quite a reflection to gamers' communities worldwide, since most of those articles (including gamershell) r dated 29.12.2007, a few days after top 100 voting was concluded on mod db. :) and i guess our fight with tlr, thus releasing of new site apps and community support added to the whole awareness thingy.

as it goes this way, fileplanet doesn't have anything on cf yet, but they do not cover freelancer well anyway. as for the rest of gamers' sites, i think that we'll make some more impression after moty 2007 goes public in february, thus having some more places hosting the mod.

it seems that our work has impacts we didn't even expect, but that's cool if u ask me. :D

anyway, if anybody is going to start a wikipage about cf, swat or anything similar, b sure to buzz me so i may include myself into the project.

3 letters pop up in my head. the last one is R^^

why don't u just create a new article "Crossfire (Freelancer Mod)"

hmm btw the CF database[s since there r 2 of 'em] could be converted to wiki maybe?
or maybe we could even have our own wiki w/ sections for FL, CF, SL, EVE and so on....

i did suggest it, and will consider it a project for some future time, after i manage to read all guidance tutorials on wiki, since i know only a few of them till now. but i must state that such a project shouldn't b taken lightly, because there r many ppl like jappalang on wikipedia just waiting to take over a project started by a less competent user, thus losing much time and nerves dealing with them trying to keep control over article.

something alike tlr is trying to build up? it's generally a good idea, but in present situation i consider it a waste of time and energy since:

    1. time and energy has already been used on making this portal what it is now,
    2. converting may show difficult and quite a job,
    3. there isn't adequate need, since we haven't got many members interesting into publishing work, especially if that means learning wiki-based cms tools and standards,
    4. cms based on sections moderated by appointed ppl is much better solution for community sites,
    5. tlr might blame us we took their idea.

  • tlr has a wiki? well okay ditch the idea or they'll feel bad^^
and the reasons - true [ditches wiki idea]

  • btw, magnet, since u like doing publishing stuff and r generally active (i saw ur work on mod db, it was quite unexpected and all-of-a-sudden, just alike ur progression in cf world, quite masterpieces imho), may i ask for ur help on wikipedia, after i decide to build up a page for us?

i will need help, and dislike working alone anyway, so, if u r interested, i would like to know i can count u in. :)

  • i dont think that we wasted time somewhere
the raising interest and activity does show it... not to mentino that we just have started

we have years infront of us where all the work will pay out.... its a natural law
when i started SWAT we had 7 members here on this forum... now we have up to 1000 which check this page daily and right now we cant say that the CF server is very well visited due to the upcoming CF release

what we have to learn here is that there are many other games that we support and that these games really need the support... we want to attract more players even when FL will be gone
(and so far we did better than TLR)
new games will be released and until that we need to build up even more .... more downloads... more mods... more projects... more information on our site
but that does only work if we have enough ppl that help us...
lets face the facts the SWAT staff is very low on numbers.... some of the moderators are not much active while others dont know where to start with their work... originally it was meant that every game has at least one moderator and we are very far away from this goal atm

im glad that some ppl contribute their part at public pages such as wiki and moddb (i intentially have made the settings on moddb so you can add your info, pics and movies)
but we also need more help here at SWAT
the spreading of information about SWAT on the FL communities was not very successful... not much feedback came back... only 2 other modding teams wanted a place on the SWAT mod db
and there we have to do much more work than before... we have to get ppl more interested in SWAT... we have to get them to use SWAT if they want information or downloads
we need to get them to present their work here at SWAT
but that does only work if we work together... and if we really push that work

the wiki site for CF or SWAT... well its not a bad idea... i would welcome that
even if just a few hundred or thousand players find their way to us by browsing wiki then its not a waste of time
not to mention that wiki is very popular and often gets high rankings on seach engines such as google

the moddb and the mod of the year award pushed FL and the 2 mods which managed to get in the top 100
many sites report about it... some sites promote the top100 mods (AMD)
in the end it is expected that more than 4mio users can see the top100 mods per month
so basically CF and Discovery are those which have the highest chance to push Freelancer again and get ppl interested. No freelancer site (including LR) is able to do something similar.

not much i can do about this, since i am new to online multiplay (serbia received broadband access to internet a few months ago, lol), but i can contribute on my own way. if u wish, u can include me into swat stuff, but my contribution is still mostly outside SWAT's site. anyway, it would b honour for me to wear SWAT's staff plating. :D

op, i will need as much of text regarding both swat and cf as u can send me, especially those from which i can learn about history of both. i will spend time reading them and getting myself informed about the issue, so i can write a good article on wiki. u have my address on profile, so, please, rar them and send. that would b of much help, since i wouldn't have to research on my own. and dont bother filtering them out, just send everything at least slightly connected with the issue.
anybody interested to help, report. (i included u, magnet, ofc.)

  • discovery is again getting sacked from wikipedia freelancer page by jappalang. :D geeez! well, he made some respectful arguments; discovery should better meet the specs if they wanna stay.

also, it seems Starport, a new fl community website praised by creators of War-Torn mod is trying to advertise on wikipedia freelancer page too, unsuccessfully. well, fan info is not really for those pages, so i agree with guys deleting it.

cf stays still, cause i wasn't forcing too much info on that page and made it according to the specs after a fight with jappalang. :D happy me. :D

  • Interesting read

It took me back to my first days playing the game - I think the Freelancer story is quite good (but short) and implemented quite well.

It's a shame there is no continuation of the storyline (or feeling of being part of something bigger) -

There could be a good opportunity somewhere for proper chars who have an 'official' role play of some of these chars

I cant remember who lived or died in the end - but it would be nice to have not a Orillion, but THE Orillion, THE King, THE Tobias, THE Junko etc

Who then would do roleplay consistent with those chars
