  • My Video card just died and I need to get a new one. I had an ATI x1600Pro 256mb. I want to get a new card but have a question.

Do the new cards that support DX10 and Windows Vista run on Windows XP and DX9?

I also have an AGP8x slot so if anyone has recommendations for my next card please post.

That will depend on the manufacturer's defaults. If a card comes with DX10 already bundled, it may not support DX9, but you will have to check the mfg's support site for driver downloads for Vista anyway, and there may be an older compatible driver among their available downloads. Just checked my favorite hardware shops, and there isn't much left for AGP slots...PCI-Express rules the day; may be time to upgrade your comp :(

EDIT: I was only looking for ATI AGP cards in the X1x series; there are quite a few other cards for AGP8X, both ATI & NVidia chipsets, for under $200US, both in 256Mb & 512Mb memory config's. Only a few of these are touted as ready for DX10; check out newegg.com or zipzoomfly.com for spec's.

  • I recently got a nVidia 7600GT 256mb running on AGP (my crappy old motherboard doesn't have PCI-E nor LGA775). IMO it's one of the best nVidia 7-series AGP cards. Runs gr8!

  • i just got a new PC with 755 and PCI-E 16x. Tis a beauty.

    Pentium D 2.80Ghz
    1Gb ADATA Gaming RAM
    160GB RAID 0 (2x80gb)
    ATi Radeon X1950 Pro 512MB PCI-E 16x
    DVD+RW Drive
    500W Power Unit
    Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 Mobo :D

Wait till i get a screenshot of The orange box games. You'll piss yourself seeing the graphics ^^

  • I just ordered a SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 2600PRO 512MB GDDR2HDCP Ready Video Card.

    DirectX 10
    OpenGL 2.0
    HDTV Out
    Max Resolution 2560 x 1600
    120 stream processors
    Shader model 4.0 support

  • eh, this is my pc (2+yrs old btw). got it really cheap (for like 200$)

MotherBoard: Asus P4D800X or something like that (No LGA775 = no modern, power-saving multicore CPUs, no uber-overclocking, no PCI-E, no nothing...)
CPU: Intel Celeron D ( <- Like the cheapest u can get) 2.4 GHz
    RAM: 1.5GB (1.0 + 0.5) 533MHz
GPU: Club3D nVidia 7600GT 256MB - This+RAM cost like the whole PC when I got it
    DVD+-RW/DL whatever (slowly dying)
    80GB 7200RPM SATA-I HDD (lol i've got a 160GB iPod)

so actually it's a piece of crap, but runs all games (except crysis) on the lowest graphics quite well :) And The Orange Box is on MAX without AA.

if it is an agp card, it will work with xp and dx9, no worries. there is not a single manufacturer that didn't enable their agp versions for xp and dx9, since it would b a suicide on the market.
u may be needing to dl drivers from chipset manufacturer, since card manufacturer may not ship it with drivers for xp, but that is not a problem, since one should always use newest working drivers possible, and those r regularly not shipped with equipment.
