Now we know what the Privateer NPCs have been doing in their spare time! BlueSky user ATMcashpoint recently noticed something interesting while watching a let's play video: some familiar faces! The game in question was German studio Motelsoft's 1995 "Escape from Ragor" and the faces in the game's character select are these handsome fellows:

That's right, they've both been modified directly from character heads in the original Wing Commander Privateer. The female option is Privateer's Mercenary Guild secretary and the male option is starting fixer Sandoval! [Did you know Sandoval's first name is Ernesto? It's in the Playtester's Guide! - ed.]

And they aren't just limited to the character select screen. Whichever one you choose appears throughout your game, in the corner of the screen and in cutscenes.

Then AllTinker noticed that this… borrow… isn't a one-off situation! He found Privateer portraits in

We've thrown around the expression "that was a weird one" before but… that was a weird one. The Canterbury Tales (1972) is certainly a movie that will stick in your head, with its endless graphic sex scenes and, ah, giant prop devil defecating corrupt friars at the conclusion. But as crazy as it all is, a lot of it is actually a very reasonable adaptation of some of the tales from The Canterbury Tales (including the devil thing). It's a movie that is, at the very least, worth seeing!

Before I forget (because I already did last week), you can read the original text of The Canterbury Tales at Project Gutenberg. Now: Baron Jukaga mentions Chaucer, the author of the Canterbury Tales, and here's director Pasolini playing him in the movie. The adaptation drops the idea that the pilgrims are telling each other these stories and instead has Chaucer writing them. The conclusion is also significantly different:

This is a reminder that we have another fun #Wingnut movie night planned on Discord this evening! The ongoing theme will be movies that are referenced by Wing Commander in some way. Tonight's film is Star Wars: Episode I -- The Phantom Menace (1999) and you can find details on why we're watching it in the announcement post here. The movie will start at 7 PM PST/10 PM EST but feel free to drop by and hang any time!

Here's a message from Wing Commander composer George Oldziey, who has a cool video of the Wing Commander 3 endgame alongside the newly orchestrated version he recorded a few years back. Pretty neat! George has done some truly incredible work orchestrating and recording his Wing Commander work across several crowd funding efforts we supposed. Maybe he has one more in him? If you're interested in picking up one of his incredible Wing Commander albums, you can do that here.

Pardon the loss of my memory, but I don’t remember whether or not I ever shared this video of enhanced footage of the WC winning endgame in which I layered the Budapest Orchestra recording over it. The timing was perfect, and the original music mix was so low the new layer doesn’t conflict at all.
Feel free to share with anyone!

George

The Independent Detention Foundation had admitted a significant breakout attempt took place aboard prison ship EVE-597.
A large number of prisoners have left the Riker-class reformatory via escape pods during the breakout. Journalists in Redonesses have reported that the Clan of Redonesses criminal faction is attempting to help the prisoners avoid recapture. It is believed the prisoners controlling EVE-597 chose the system specifically as the controlling faction is sympathetic to their cause.
The Foundation has put out a call for independent pilots to subdue criminal pilots in the system while security forces track down escaped convicts.
"These prisoners are our responsibility," a Foundation spokesperson said. "We would rather recover them alive, and it is safer for everyone if the criminal pilots trying to prevent convict recapture are dealt with."

Ever since No Man's Sky, the space game that continues to show up all other modern space games in terms of content and competence, released their corvette-building update there has been a steady dribble of people trying to recreate classic Wing Commander ships. And no one has been more active–or dare we say more successful–at this than Shaggy. This time around they've created a pitch-perfect Drayman-class transport (Wing Commander I style) that ties in to the game's next big update! Here's the story:

So in my continuing addiction to building corvettes in No Man's Sky I finally put together one of the top picks I had for the game, the venerable Drayman class cargo ship. I finally tackled this one for two reasons.

1) In the current Cosmos update Hello Games added scavenge missions in space. So now you can go out and tear pieces off of derelict ships and overgrown infected space stations and collect it all
