The Wing Commander movie club can report that Ten Thousand Bedrooms was... not spectacular. In spite of it being a pretty bland movie we did make a pretty surprising Wing Commander discovery! But you'll have to wait until Friday to learn about that. This week we're going back to our roots and watching a movie that pretty much anyone reading this will love: Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982). Star Trek II is obviously a massively important movie that clearly helped shape countless IPs including Wing Commander. But what's the specific connection? This one is a bit of a followup to our look at THX-1138: the 'other' jokey credit for a Mandarin pilot in Special Operations 2 is Mandarin #16309... which is a reference to the USS Reliant's transponder code!
We don't have a gender bending mystery here but we do have a bit more audio! Mandarin #16309, played by Origin writer Jack Hermann, is the generic Mandarin NPC who you'll encounter a number of times in Special Operations 2.

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan is available to rent or purchase on the standard streaming services. It is currently streaming on Paramount+ in the United States. If you would like a physical copy, it was released on 4K UHD disc in 2022 and remains in print around the world. We are watching the 113 minute theatrical cut, which is the most commonly available version. If you are not able to locate a copy please stop by the Discord and ping a CIC staff member before Friday's showing.
How do we watch the movie together?
It's pretty low tech! Simply join the Wing Commander CIC Discord on Friday and we will be chatting (in text) along with the film in the main channel. Everyone who wants to join in should bring their own copy and we will count down to play them together at 10 PM EST. Everyone is welcome and we encourage you to join in the conversation; sharing your thoughts helps make the experience better for everyone!
How can I help pick future movie club movies?
The movie club movies are voted on each week by the Wing Commander Discord. The poll is typically posted 24 hours before each week's screening and the next movie is announced at the end. The choices for the poll come from a master pool of Wing Commander-related movies. If you would like to suggest a film for inclusion in that pool you can post it to this thread.
