Tip: If you are comfortable with RegEdit then you do not even need to uninstall FLMM in order to change mods using this method. Just rename or delete the string value for the currently activated mod in the key: HKLM\Software\Freelancer Mod Manager

If you are not comfortable with RegEdit, or have questions about the above, then just uninstall FLMM as Shockwave says.

In that case, you are seeing something different than what I see, Spiky, which changes my question into a bug report.

Many of the hidden objects in the Inner Core are invisible as close as 5-10k, which is very different than the rest of the Crossfire universe.

I agree that the majority of important objects are visible at long range, except for the Inner Core (and a few in Altair).

Just curious.... why is the gate to Venn nearly invisible, both to the eye and to the scanners? There don't seem to be the usual floating debris markers, either. It requires a very tight grid search to find it... is that intentional?

There are a few secret objects like that. Finding them is more boring than fun.

Jerra, it is hard to know for certain from what you have told us so far, but my guess is that you have missed a couple of important places. By missing them, it lead you through a series of (frustrating) events.

As NucNuc said, the key to stopping any ship from fleeing (Xenos or ships that you attempt to pirate) is a Cruise Disruptor. The Wasp Cruise Disruptor is available at many bases that support pirates, including the Junker's bases (such as Rochester). Junkers are pretty neutral, so you can often dock at a Junkers base even when most criminals are hostile. (The same is true of the Zoners).

Therefore, if you never found Rochester (and never docked at any pirate base), then you could miss cruise disruptors completely. You might also miss most of the cool Crossfire ships and weapons, which are generally found in Crossfire systems. Most Crossfire systems require you to find "secret" jump holes or jump gates: jumps that are not on the trade lanes.

You can see many of secret jumps at longer range than your scanners will pick up, so it is important to look around as you travel. Use the "H" key for Turret Mode so that you can look around while your ship is traveling on autopilot.

Also, use your Nav Map to display Patrol Routes to see where the AI (NPC) ships patrol. That can help you to find hidden things (such as wrecks or jumps or pirate bases).

Finally, each of the major houses has at least one prison: Liberty, Brittania, Kusari, Rheinland, and Coalition at least. Only the Texas Prisons are on the trade lanes -- the rest are "hidden" somewhere off of the trade lanes. Use the above tips to find them.

Some Systems (in Sirius Sector) with prisons:

It certainly is faster than any NPC I have ever encountered. The Bullpup Mk3 might not be the quickest-maneuvering ship in the game, but it is certainly one of the more "survivable" ships.

As Rex said, stay in cruise mode as much as possible. If you get disrupted or caught at standard speed, then turn on those wonderful dual thrusters and fly in a corkscrew pattern (move the mouse in circles so that you fly mostly in one direction but are constantly changing directions in order to limit the number of hits that you take).

For a few, vital, seconds, nothing will be able to catch you in a Bullpup Mk3.

(Note that the dual thrusters burn through thruster power quickly, so use engine kill with frequent taps of the thrusters to keep speed up and direction changing while conserving fuel. Also look for a pair of the better thrusters... say, at a Golden Chrysanthemum base, for example :) ).

I think that we were all kidding around, Hellraiser. Not so much making fun of you -- more like continuing with your joke.

"Handicapping" is a common way to give a newer player an advantage when playing a sport against a more experienced player. For example:

    • Golf Handicap = Number of points removed from a player's total score. A strong player with a "3" handicap playing a weaker player with a "10" handicap must win by more than 7 points.
    • Chess: A strong player might "spot" a newer player one or more "pieces" -- a pawn if the players are very close, a queen if they are far apart in strength.
    • Games with scores often have a "spread". If my team gives your team 5 points, then it means that we must have at least 5 more points than you in order to "win".

We know that you were kidding about "calling Haegar out". I thought it was funny, but I also knew that you don't stand a chance against any of the better players until you get more experience, so I suggested a handicap.

However, most of the realistic handicaps that I could think of were complicated to explain. You said that you are flying a Titan, which is the most heavily armored VHF in vanilla Freelancer, so I suggested that Haegar fly the most lightly-armored fighter in vanilla Freelancer -- the Starflier.

But it is a joke, because the Starflier is also the quickest-maneuvering vanilla fighter while the Titan is the slowest. So, the reality is that an experienced PvP pilot can probably still win easily in that contest -- perhaps more easily than if both of you had identical equipment.

That is what Michael meant when he laughed at my choice -- because the handicap would really work against you rather than against Haegar.

So the whole thing is just a bunch of people kidding around.

    Cool?

    EDIT...

:) I know that you are kidding about that, too, Hellraiser. But I am not sure whether you understand the entire joke. As Spiky and Michael said, an Eagle is actually one of the most "winning" fighters in MP because it hits hard and is highly maneuverable.

There is a video clip in an older thread here of Spiky chasing a worthy opponent with guns only -- not an easy pursuit. But Spiky has a fast PC (an advantage in MP), excellent skills, and is relentless. The result is that he takes down his target in less than a minute.

It is really a good training clip -- you can learn quite a bit just by watching him.

Yeah, I have seen some amazingly funny and "creative" behavior on the part of the NPCs. The AI engine has a lot more intelligence than was used in vanilla Freelancer.

    1) In Sirius, you can often find things by looking at the Patrol Routes on the Nav map. Check where the Friendlies, Enemies, and Neutral NPCs (non-player characters -- the AI's) patrol.

    2) Throughout Crossfire, you can often see objects at greater distance than your scanners can detect. Use the "H" key for the turret view so that you can look around while you are on autopilot.

    Gurm mainly

I have been attacked by Nomads in Gurm when the DKs were friendly. I believe that is due to the "local sub-faction" that I mentioned previously. The Nomads that are still pissed at me are the ones that I killed on my way into DK territory.

As for Nomads vs. DK... it makes some sense, to me, that they could have "differences" in Gurm or Sovetskaya (after you return from the Inner Core). But OP actually knows how it works.

If your antivirus crippled part of Crossfire, I would expect you to have more problems (like the folks complaining about seeing "IDs?" on their infocards).

Does it bother you that Nomads fight DKs? Or are you just reporting it because you did not expect it?

I am not sure what to think about your DK vs. Nomad report, Voxxraiden, which is why I did not say anything. I have not seen DK's fighting Nomads.

The only thing that I can add to the discussion is that the reputation system has sub-factions. That is why you can be friendly with a faction but some of the members of that faction are still enemies... like if you attacked their base or their friends or something.

If it is "possible" for DK's to fight Nomads, then my guess is that it would be a location-specific sub-faction fighting. But OP knows the details.

In which system(s) have you seen them fight?

I do not think that is a "bug". If anything, it appears to me that some of the clues can be obscure, depending on which path you take through them. But we have to figure out specific cause-and-effect in order to give OP a report that he can use.

Yep, that sounds like the right place.

    For clarification, have you:

The clue that you seem to be missing should be in Rumors rather than News. Of course, if the Rumors are blank as well, then you are out of luck!

Yes, you should be able to continue with what you know. The missing clue should not cause trouble.

However, you will need to see News again -- in other systems.

As you say, if you do need to re-install, then just install as Open SP. That way you will not have to re-play the campaign.

Thank you for the clarification. Somebody else will have to give you an "official" answer, but it does sound unusual to me. There are some bases without News icons, but most have them.

Which bases have no News icons? Have you checked at bases in

    recently?

At least now your registry is cleaned up and your hard drive is checked and defragged... :)

PS: In case you are curious about the details: Icons are stored as "resources" in .exe and .dll files. In this case, the icon still points to Freelancer.exe. In a case like that, all that really needs to be done is to refresh the icon cache.

Sometimes all you need to do is to reboot. However, that does not always do the trick, but clicking the "Change icon" button does!

The source for the icon is not hidden, NucNuc. It is right out in plain sight:

    1) Right-click on the icon.

    2) Select Properties

    3) Click the button "Change icon"

There are many different kinds of freighters and many different ways to play Freelancer. Your choice is highly individual. Asking what kind of freighter to buy (without further information) is a little like asking what you should study in school. Only you can make the final decision, and the factors involved are complex and personal.

That said, the advice about the APC Armored Transport is excellent. The APC is one of my favorite "general purpose" ships in the game. It can take a beating or dish one out, and it has a huge hold for a multi-function ship.

Another general purpose ship worth considering is the Bullpup Mk3 "Assault Freighter".

    Choosing between the two:

Suggestion: Earn a lot of credits and try both. Either would be a fine starting point.

The Dromedary is one of my favorite ships in vanilla Freelancer, as well. Rhino and Clydesdale are good early in the game but, for your second character, you will probably want more.
