A bit further down the discussion another NASA-worker gives a statement and original writer tells a funny story about his boss and ED, too...
2nd one was amazed that the amount of brown dwarfs and binary-systems was like it should be.

I found this quite interesting - hope it fits here:

After over 10 years of working with NASA's Cassini spacecraft mission at Saturn and wondering what it would be like to be there, I can't express how rewarding and mind-blowing it was to actually get to fly above the rings of a Saturn-like planet in my own Virtual Reality spacecraft!
I've worked closely with the images from the Cassini mission and I can tell you Elite did such a wonderful job capturing the scale, shadows, beautiful colors and intricate patterns of a ringed planet. Skimming over the ring plane, diving through the ring gaps, marveling at the massive amount of simulated ring particles while the enormous planet body engulfs my field of view; I can't get enough of it! Not only that, but it looks like a lot of the icy moons in Elite are modeled after the moons of Saturn and Jupiter. The approach and takeoff vistas from moons leave me grinning every time, too.
In case you haven't seen the photos from this mission, check out a few of these websites for comparison to Elite:

Now if i can just get my Federation rank up, I want to make the pilgrimage to Sol and see how well they actually modeled Saturn proper and its moons.
I totally agree with what Truesilver posted above. The changes in 2.1 gave a massive favour to shields and together with the high heat-penalty when fireing from stealth lead to an insta-death of stealth-fighting (=shieldless hulltank).
However, I'm still trying it in a cheap DBS and it still can work, although not as good as in 2.0. When opponent has emissive-mods and "marks" you, you will have a really bad time, especially if they have missiles, as they are the biggest threat to an unshielded ship now. So stealth in >2.1 *needs* short fireing guns (to be visible ony shortly), dual-chaff for when you need to go out of stealth due to heat and to avoid gimballed when "marked". My personal approach is 2 med rails and 2 small seekers in the DBS, rails modded with 1x penetrator and 1x cascade, seekers with overload**.
Tactic is going silent and work with missiles, trying to get in a close dogfight which allows to drop silent for 3-4s which is needed that the heat-penalty from silent is gone, then fire some rails until in front of opponent, then go silent again.
This is just meant as an example that you still don't have to rely totally on shields, it has just become way more risky to not do it. IMO it was the right way as everyone and his dog was stealth-fighting towards the end of 2.0.
**) i had two heat-cascade-seekers first and they worked great, too - keeping the opponent very hot. Overload helps when you only aim tpo bring shields down fast, the drag-mod i'm uncertain as many fly FAO in big ships and won't notice much.
Cheerio! o7
Thank you all very much again...
My sparse gaming time is consumed by ED atm, so not much CF for me these times...
Many thanks!
Yes, smuggling missions were nerfed because too many players complained about them beeing too easy.
You now fail the mission when scanned, not only a small fine way under your profit.
However, the old "submit-silent-boost-boost-sink-jump" still works perfectly for me. You should have a fast enough ship to gain distance to the scanning ship. When entering stations, same principle... combination of silent/boost/sink. And yes, they scan a lot more now due to abovementioned reason... -.-
When in need of money (seldom, as I still have much fun with Asp and DBS), I do either bounty-hunting in RES, mining or long-range-smuggles*. The normal missions I only use for reputation and rank with the factions.
Some of the new missions of 1.5 I never done myself, so can't tell exactly how they work, sry... need to test some day...
I interdicted 4 Cmdrs yesterday without any issues(?) (was a 3A-Interdictor, i think...)
* they go over 400LY and you have interdictors/scanners on your back - so a bit high-risk/high-reward

Latest "hotfix" for AMD-drivers is reported to fix the SC-issue:
Ich kann Dir versichern, daß an dieser Station noch nie ein Player-Train docken konnte.... auch nicht mit irgendwelchen nicht vorhandenen Glitches.
Muß man denn aus jeder Mücke nen Elefanten machen? *seufz*
Weshalb gefixt? Das ist ja so gedacht....
Looks like they will finish the game in the next 3-5 years or so...
Just saw now that the AMD-Update was maybe a co-incidence?
Both updates arrived at same time for me, so can't tell for sure if one triggered the other. But I know that FD was asking AMD since a longer time to investigate this problem, too... we'll see. I have both thumbs pressed that this FPS-drop disappears!
Todays Update of ED came together with a Driver(-Fix) for AMD.
As I never had problems with FPS-drop in supercruise, I don't know if it fixes the problem. May be worth a try.

Someone made this video after a race from Sol to Sagittarius A*, the black hole in the center of our galaxy...
