going virtual

  • This is an enquire:

IF POSSIBLE to keep your body in a satisfactory biological suspension AND CONECT YOU to a SUPERCOMPUTER and therefore to the INTERNET (and everything else "NET"), WOULD YOU BE READY TO ALLOW THAT? This means your mind would live on the virtual sphere, etc...

    Plz write your thoughts...

Only dead fish swim with the stream.
Don't discuss with idiots. They only drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience there.

    This is ten percent luck,
    Twenty percent skill,
Fifteen percent concentrated power of will,
    Five percent pleasure,
    Fifty percent pain,
And a hundred percent reason to remember the name!

  • Ermmm... how about inumerable pleasures of knowledge, speed, omnipresence (virtual, of course... :D ), images, instant knowledge, etc... I am not sure your body would support all that stimuli, etc... Or, on the other hand, would the old good stuff be the ones bound to our old limited nature? :D

Do you really think do you have, really?... or are you just content with what you have now, that is so little comparable to the potential of that.

Concerning "advantages", you as an individual, mind and body, singularity among all humans, you wouldn t have much advantages. I think I wouldn t.

  • If my mind would be locked in a computer, then i would lose all my emotions & all my characteristics that make me an individual...

Assumption is the mother of all fuckups.

  • Virtual sex in a body connected to a supercomputer may be great, but still a big fat fake, so... going virtual x getting real scores 0 x 2 :D

  • William Gibson is known for his futuristic visions of such things; read his trio of books, Neuromancer, Count Zero and Mona Lisa Overdrive. While the hardware aspects of those stories are now reather dated, the overall concepts are still ahead of us.

Another author who touched on this concept is Poul Anderson, in his Heechee series; the idea being that the ultimate form of "health insurance" provides for the complete transfer of consciousness into a digital medium, for either temporary or permanent replacement of the body 8o (Also the premise of "Freejack", with Anthony Hopkins, Mick Jagger, Renee Russo & Emilio Estevez). The older I get, the more attractive this looks... As for actually having a continuous connection to the internet, I doubt that the human psyche can handle that much information without complete dissociation of personality, and would likely lapse into permanent and irreversible psychosis (ala "Lawnmower Man")... :(

  • I think rather than attaching oneself permemently to the computer, it would be more logical to invent an evolved computer that can allow such integretion with cyberspace - but then be able to disengage so you can go about things as normal. Technology brings sophistication and vulnerability to civilization, and while the pursuit of better, more efficient things are important, in the end dreams and technology support reality - not the other way around 8)

  • i said i already have that

the brain is the most complex structure that can handle data... no supercomputer.. no network will be able to be better than an ordinary brain
even we use just a few percent of its capacities (some more ... some less) it is way better than computers
and like a computer you only need to learn to use it... and that takes time

not to mention that i dont want to be based on a MS system... "MS OP-R8R XP" or "MS OP-R8R 2023" (even the name doesnt sound that bad ^^)

ROFL! Yes, duplicating the functions of the human brain is the "holy grail" of computer science, but it will take many generation before any comparison will be relevant. I believe that as we discover more about how our brains interact with our minds , we will also learn to optimize our mental functions to perhaps double our current common capacity (which will leave us another 80% to go!). Such training will become incorporated into primary, or even pre-school education, so that the high performance cognition portrayed by Star Fleet graduates in popular science fiction may become a reality...[525]

another interesting point of view about this matter is given by Robert J. Sawyer in "The terminal experiment". he places the idea of eternal virtual life, with instant access to all the knowledge of the human race without the limitations of the human body, against the inmortality of the physical human body that can be reached using the most advanced nanotechnology
the end of the book is a bit disturbing ^^
