i sum up this incredible discussion by saying:
the internet is good... to let some "special" ppl (aka idiots) get online is not so good
The internet and is its globalization will be the most important advancement in human communication since the invention of the telephone. Over time this marvel may become a key milestone in the evolution of society towards the inevitable unification of the human race.

I think it is the most important advancement since the invention of writing, or the wheel.... And we all know that this form of internet, based on sites and homepages, is already oldfashioned, etc... The constant advance of interconectivity between individuals and cultures, the velocity of this communication events, the overwhelming amount of information to be handled may cause some problems for us to be situated in a global com-sphere, to take decisions, to care for other significant aspects of human relations, as for exemple, the face of the other who is next to you. We can turn to be techno-open, but not heart-open... bla, bla, bla...
The trouble in controling the negative aspects is that I would think that addiction is often hard to classify for the internet. With business, communication, recreation, and information being channeled through a single source, a CEO may be as dependent upon it as a gaming junkie. I'm not going to say what's acceptable and what is not, but with computers becoming so integrated into the modern standard of living and the internet empowering them to undertake vast arrays of work, who doesn't have some level of dependency? As I see it though everyone always has a way of unwinding. Some read, some game, others hang out with friends, fix things, go fishing... whatever. In all reality nothing anyone does in life amounts to anything, but keeping priorities straight (loved ones, work, and friends never have to wait for me to finish a Sol run, sry 8)) is key to maintaining a healthy connection with the web 
what i think is good:
- i do not really know if i could still do my job the way i do without the internet, as i very often find some other with the same software problems: sometimes there is already a hint or solution to solve it - most times there are at least loads of ppl to discuss the problem and solve it together...
- for private life there is this community which i would not have met without the net
what i think is not so good:
- internet addiciton, as discussed above
- the technical means to control a whole aspect of ur life. imagine all the data u spread all over the world... which book u bought online, tickets u ordered and much more. if these data come together at one place (be it for commercial or police purpose) ... - ur privacy is lost

|-> thats why we've got some data security engineers who all "should" try to keep the rights of all people! But they haven't got at least the power they should have (i mean their sayings are often ignored by our politicians :D)
I like the internet and of course sometimes it makes my work more comfortable (looking for sultions for software development, general information and so on) -> and for future times the internet becomes more and more powerful with some changes for all of us (e.g. IPv6, Grid-Computing, World Summit on the Information Society, etc).
BUT it may happend that the glassy people will be created by that changes.
I love my I-net.
I have it since December, 2006 and I would not like to miss it any more
I can talk whit the people in other countries.
I can play CF
but i think the I-net will be abused from many bad people and i think abuse must punishes harder[hanged]

well, it is said that nowaday terrorists and terrorist groups mainly use the internet for communication purposes (or even recruiting new ppl into their groups)
