This was posted by Zeus from Olympus Servers :

To answer some of the questions about the number of players on a server for MP let me state what I have setup for my Freelancer servers.

While Freelancer is programed to allow up to 128 players per server, the bandwidth available, cpu power, memory, and hd subsystem determine the real number. I have found that my dual AMD Opteron based servers can handle 40 to 50 players at one time without any real drain on the cpu's and memory. The real limit is the bandwidth on my internet connection. The servers are MS 2003 Standard and have 4 GB of ram with dual Opteron 254's and 10k rpm raid 5 scsi drives. FL uses about 2k to 4k per user depending on what mod is running on the server (an FL mod changes the universe, ships, bases, trade goods, weapons, etc. from the original MS release).

Using this as a basis, 128 players @ 4k each equals approx 512K of uplink bandwidth. Since the FL engine has to display everything around you and the interactions from all others back to you (i.e. explosions, ship movement, weapons fire, missles, torps, etc.), then unless you have 1MB upload or better, you will not get the max. players allowed. I base the number of players on my servers by cutting in half what the max is to allow for different transit times around the world as I have players from all over, so I limit my servers to 50 players. Even with this number, the interactions and game play are fantastic. Now if I knew what each player needs as far as bandwidth for Rogue Universe, then I could make the calculations for hosting an MP server. If someone on the dev team would like to comment on this...that would be great, otherwise I will have to wait for the MP version and figure out the bandwidth then.

I do want to ask that an MP version be supported on private hosted servers and not a pay per month on-line centralized server. Another game already has this and the cost per month of it keeps people playing on servers, like mine, that are free.

It' all about building a community that will keep playing and spreading the word to attract new players. Right now there are several thousand FL players worldwide still playing a game that the manufacturer abandoned long ago. That is COMMUNITY! And if SF Rogue Universe allows MP and keeps enhancing the game, then that would generate sales and profit for the game company for many years to come.

The FL community is looking for a replacement, and several of us in that community, think this game is just the game to do it!

Thanks Zeus. Good to know. What is speed of you conection (server link)?
For large player count , bandwidth is always the bigest problem.

OP you have the inside story. Does this mean that SF:RU Will have MP? And more important is SWAT going to offer SF:RU ?

    Yes Burros Do Bite.

    Chars: SMG_Burro and derivatives thereof

    SMG Forums

  • no SF2 will not have MP
a MP was not developed nor do i think that they can realize this in the give time till the release since MP is much different from SP

i also have my doubts about a MP Patch since it wouldnt make much economical sence

btw. the calculation done there about the bandwidth and the cpu load is pure nonsence

  • This is the kind of question that i know that you dont like (OP), because is based on "migth" and "Maybe", but im going to do it anyway.

If in the future (SF3, add on, or what ever the way), guys at provox release a MP version...would you consider to move on there, or at least support it? (In terms of modding)

  • "IF" this is going to happen then "MAYBE" I "MIGHT" consider it
