Check the wiki and Lexicon here.
Check different bases.
Ask other players what they fly and why then make a choice.
Some ships work well for some people and don't work at all for others.
Just remember that the heavier the armour the less manoeuvrable the ship is.

Get the Redemption. Has higher top speed than most other fighters, and can mount 6 class 10 guns.
