Windows 10 update broke my Freelancer...

  • I had previously installed Freelancer on my current computer, and it worked, for a while. I ended up uninstalling it for extra hard drive space, and now i want to play Crossfire again, but whenever i try to launch even vanilla Freelancer, it doesn't work. What I mean by it not working: I double click on the freelancer.exe shortcut on my desktop, the screen goes black for a couple of seconds (anywhere from 5 to 15 seconds) then my regular desktop shows up again. I have installed the no-cd crack, and JFLP

If it helps, my gpu is a nvidia geforce GTX 1650.
I have attached a copy of the event viewer log, hopefully it'll help someone figure out what the issue is...

  • You have installed the game into C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Freelancer\, that often makes trouble on windows 10.
Try to install into another folder, not in c:\program files.

Black screen and exit can also be a problem of missing direct-x parts, latest direct-x version from microsoft web site should solve that.

  • vanilla fl by default will not run on windows 10

A no-cd exe is required to get it to run

Only dead fish swim with the stream.
Don't discuss with idiots. They only drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience there.

I don't know what trouble it caused you in the 32bit directory, but it never caused any issues for me.
(Just thought to put that out)

  • error code 0xc0000005 means Access Violation.

This error can be caused by Ram that is overclocked too far, or trying to write to a read-only file.

Go to your Freelancer install directory, right click on Freelancer folder, and uncheck "read-only" including subfolders.

Also, try running Freelancer.exe with administrator rights (open Freelancer\EXE folder, right click on Freelancer.exe, in compatibility options, enable run as admin)

Since Win10 access rights for the program folder(s) are very restrictive, which causes problems for FLMM and CF as they need write access
Maybe you changed the access rights on your computer?

  • As a matter of fact, I did. I'm supposed to have full access and I don't like being restricted when I am in my full authority to have that access.

Hmmm, now thinking about it... that could be the reason.
