    1. i was not going to take a dual core coz of that possible prob... i was just giving this option coz i was interested in what ppl think


    2. yes you are right 64 bit could b a prob but i have 0 possibilities to try it out and the host (one of europes biggest hosts) is not going set up a test server
    ergo: i have 0 chance to test anything


    3. ive been analyzing the problem with the current server... without any results... its a 1mbit connection... which is way more than enough... hdd is not the problem (and FL doesnt cause much read/write processes), the only thing i noticed is that the FLserver itself uses more and more memory the longer it is running but not more than 340mb
    2GB ram should be enough for FL aswell
    so the problem falls back to the inability to manage those 340mb memory load either because the processor cant handle this "memory leak" or there is a problem with the BUS



    but personally i would say that i dont like to pay 169 for a 1 1/2 year old system so the upgrade was the logical choice

    Any information about hardware other FL servers are running on?

    ive checked LR and ive seen 2 threads where other admins announced running servers with dual opterons (so it looks like they are working with FL)

    well, imho, in that case, instead of upgrading your current RAM, it would be better to upgrade to option 2.


    Same fee, better system. But what about the setup fee?

    So it is working on 64bit CPU's.
    Then server 4.
    The opteron 148 has a L2 cache of 1 MB, the 3500+ has a L2 cache of 512 KB. This helps the processor a lot during calculations. Server 5 is a bit overkill i believe, and given the figures you gave me, 4 GB is not necesarry. 1 GB could do as well, but 2 is better (less chance of swapping).

    Had no time to read whole posts but most about what Nitro have written.


    1) 64bits - I think most likely the server offered will still run 32bit OS but nothing sure. Windows 2003 in main is same as XP atleast the core, drivers same too, video hardware acceleration disabled by default but those things can be set back to as in XP so in main i think there is no difference except 2003 have less useless things and use less resourses


    2) dual core - its not acurate to compare X2 3800+ with single core 3800+ cause the second is runing at 2.5-2.6GHz (not sure but is high ^^) and X2 3800+ is at 2GHz. Big advantage of X2 could be when using a antivirus software. More optimization can be achieved by using custom tools like the one that tomshardware created to manually set profiles for programs to use first or second core.


    3) Dont know what P4 server is using now - i think its verry possible to use Hyper-Threading. Its know that windows cant arrange the tasks between the two logical processors verry well so in alot cases when software is not optimized for such processor there is less performance compared if HT is been disabled. Good option i think is again the tool mentioned above from tomshardware for manual arranging the tasks and cores



    If i get it right you were wondering does FL can run on Athlon64 - yes no problems both server or client - its not only me but alot other players here can confirm it. AMD64 technology is extend to standart 32bit architecture - when processor is running 64bit OS it enable more internal registers and extensions and offer more performance, when its running 32 bit software on 64bit OS, windows x64, use WoW64 to translate in real time instructions from 32bit stream to 64bit stream and from what i have tested and seen usually there is no performance loss - its usually faster or equal performance as in XP 32bit. Forget about 16bit applications as Nitro mentioned. However if most of the tools can be recompiled to 32bit exe's (like some C compilers can choose between both) i think wont be a problem to run FL on x64.

    win 2003 64bit would be running on it then
    and yes current p4 has ht but there is no better performance if its used

    how will it be financed?


    there are 100 for setup
    and there is the need to run 2 servers for 1 month (to transfere all the stuff and have no downtime)
    so that would be 100 + 169
