What are the criteria for being able to mount weight reduction upgrades?
With 70 units cargo space available I am confronted with "..not enough cargo space available.." This connection with cargo space seems a bit odd, after all, the upgrade is supposed to replace heavy components with lighter ones... ?

I see there is a new one - MK III for same price - 2mil. I have two identical chars one wit harmor and one with this WRK - i couldnt test it fully i had no enough time but what i first saw is that the ship react faster on moving commands as example when you suddenly decide to make hard turn it react faster.

Could someone with insight please explain the precise workings of this Weight Reduction Upgrade. There are a number of aspects about it which I find rather peculiar.
1. Why should replacing heavy compnents with lighter ones take up 60 cargo units?
2. Why is thruster speed reduced? With a Weight Reduction Upgrade III mounted and Armour Class 10 onboard (but not mounted, see question 3.), I have observed a drop from 189, with an Advanced Thruster, to a lethargic 154! This remained the case when the Armour was mounted and not the Weight Reduction Upgrade.
3. Why is it possible only to mount either Armour or a Weight Reduction Upgrade? The two would seem to compliment rather than eliminate one another.
4. As e.g. Class 10 Armour increases armour by 100% by how much, % or specific weight units, do the various Weight Reduction Upgrades reduce a vessel's mass?Hope someone can help out with this.

because the light material takes up more space for heaving nearly the same effects

ive not choosen the example with the hull for no reason... in fact the reducer and the armor are mounted on the same place (the hull) so you can only mount one of themQuote4. 1% - well depending on the ship
those reducers are build for capital ships in first place not for fighters -
Well if a WRK means its the effects of replaceing steel with aluminum hull.....ill stick with the steel and ditch the WRK. If u need more aluminum to eqate the same as steel...u not going to reduce weight by much anyway.

Can't say I wholeheartedly agree with the "... are mounted on the same place (the hull) so you can only mount one of them" business, I would still view the reduction as being a component replacement process rather than something supplementary being mounted, but, you're the boss
As for replacing nice strong steel (density aprox. 8030 kg/m3) with flimsy aluminium (density 2700 kg/m3) ; yes, that would mean a lot of aluminium to attain the same strength, but then one might well see the weight reduction become a weight increase. Actual components of a set shape and size would loose weight but also considerable strength. Why not go for Titanium (density 4050 kg/m3) or something even more exotic - after all, we are not exactly limited by our present level of technology here are we [wink2] - thereby both loosing weight and gaining strength within the confines of the same volume.
Still, all this waffling aside, if the weight reduction is set to 1% then I can clearly see that it is of very little benefit to any but the largest of vessels. Though it didnt quite come with a money back guarantee, Ive already handed it back to the nice arms dealer who sold it to me.
The speed thing, which appears to have stuck even after ridding myself of the weight reduction: It disappears after cruise has been activated once, then reappears after docking with a station or planet but can again be alleviated by a short burst of cruise. A little odd, but a harmless and quaint enough little quirk [konfus]

modern metallurgical processes mean that aluminum doesn't simply have to cast or pressed it can be extruded in to have geometric cavities IE honeycombs that greatly increase rigidity and can be alloyed with many other elements and bonded with no need for welds further reducing weight and increasing strength

perhaps an idea for a future version would be to make different versions of Weight Reduction Kits

Well, please correct me if I am wrong, but from my experimenting with weight reduction addons on my own PC, mounting a WRK (or armor with negative mass) simply reduces the mass of the ship, meaning that your ship will drift less and have better response to turning commands. It does not effect the turn rate itself (which is defined in shiparch - does not change, even with addons). In a ship w/mass = 400, you might be able to turn as as quickly as a LF, but since that ship's mass is so high, it will drift for say 100 meters even if you turn a full 180 degrees. Mount a WRK-type addon that reduces that mass by 150, leaving your ship with mass 250, and now you can still turn at that same LF-like rate, just drifting less (only 25 meters or something), allowing more responsive handling of that ship.

By this I mean, since aluminium can be be extruded with honeycomb cavities and be stronger than sheets of steel, and aluminium is also lighter, then I suggest the following changes:
WRK MK1:
Provides an aluminium hull, strength increases by 10%, and the ship is more maneuverable and faster.
WRK MK2:
Provides an aluminium alloy hull, strength increases by 25%, ship speed and maneuverability remains the same as with MK1.
WRK MK3: (Is it the highest?)
Provides a Titanium Alpha Alloy* hull, strength increases by 50% but speed / maneuverability does not increase (Titanium is 60% heavier than Aluminium).
WRK MK4:
Provides a Titanium Beta Alloy* hull, strength increases by 65 %, speed / maneuverability decrease slightly to normal values.
WRK MK5:
Provides a mix of aluminium and Titanium Beta Alloy* to increase strength to 75% and increase speed and maneuverability.
