Some installer Questions (For best Singleplayer experience)

  • Hi folks,

i've been a huge freelancer fan for over 10 years now, and played the story countless times. I also played online for a few years, but these days are over :) Anyway, i've just replayed the campaign and i loved it. And with pure coincidence, i found Crossfire, and it's just plain awesome! The graphics are stunning and i can't wait to play the campaign one more time and see how it will continue (And if, for me, crossfire lives up to it's name of the unofficial freelancer sequel :) )

Anyway, i've already got it running, but I still have some issues. Please note, that right now i'm only interested in singleplayer and the campaign. Whenever i want to change something in FLMM, it seems like i have to do a complete reinstall, as deactivating and re-activating the mod will only cause problems. So after 3-5 attempts by now, i want to make it finally right and start playing. So here are my questions:

    1. As i'm playing on 1920x1200, i put widescreen support on. But there are 2 hud options, one being 16:9 and one being 4:3. The 16:9 one seemed to work good, but what if i want to use the classic hud? Will i encounter problems? I try to keep everything pretty vanilla, so classic Trent and classic Juni were a nobrainer for me! (Although i must say, good job on the crossfire trent - graphics wise)

    2. The new cursor didn't really suit me, but the classic one still doesn't seem to be the vanilla one? What is going on there, and which one should i pick? Are there any comparions? I don't really want to reinstall the game 7 times just to take a look at 7 cursors. I think the crossfire cursor (default option) is quite....well, would certainly take it's time to getting used to it.

    3. "Render low nebula clouds" = What exactly does that mean? My PC is quite powerful, so i want as much eyecandy as possible. But does that improve the quality or not? I'm a bit confused :/

    4. "Display Roleplay Licences" - I guess that does not effect singleplayer at all, does it? And if so, what should i use for the best Singleplayer experience?

    5. Ingame it doesn't show my shipspeed in the HUD anymore? Is this intended? (Don't really see a reason behind it..) Or did i do something wrong with the installer? Or is it just my 16:10 resolution?

    6. The font appears to be quite big - almost too large sometimes. So some textboxes need additional lines and so on. Once again, is this intended, or did i do something wrong?

    7. Tools like Freelancer Explorer or Freelancer Companion crash when CF is activated. I guess freelancer is just too big now? Or is there anything what can be done about that? Or should i just....deal with it? :P

    8. The Crossfire Launcher seems to update 2 files everytime i want to start SP. Anything i can do about that? Is this a known bug?

I would be very thankful if someone could help me with my questions. After all, i'm still stunned about replaying the first Mission in such nice graphics and i can't look forward to finish the crossfire story. But i want to make sure, i get (technical wise) the best experience possible :)

    Best regards!

  • Hello Spaceman15, welcome to Crossfire and to this site!

    1. Widescreen support and Classic HUD work just fine together.
    2. You can change the cursor set at any time in launcher settings, but the main "arrow" cursor is same for all sets (including classic one). Took me a few days to get used :)
    3. I think this option was originally called "Render low res nebula clouds" and it needs to be turned off for better graphics.
    4. NPCs don't have licenses, so this option does not affect singleplayer at all, as you were right to guess :salutes
5, 6. Both issues are solved by "fonts-fix.cmd" in your Freelancer directory, or by manually installing the font from "Crossfire_2.ttf" file located in "<FLMM folder>\mods\Freelancer 2 - Crossfire\DATA\FONTS\Files\"
    7. No idea about those programs, but you can use our Wiki instead -> https://swat-portal.com/forum/cms/wiki/crossfire/
    8. This behaviour is normal, and one can also skip updates for SP (but better let it update from time to time).

    Hope this helps.

  • Hey Wanderer,
thanks for your great reply! This his pretty much solved all my questions! Awesome! :)

About 8: i'm only wondering why the game keeps updating these 2 files every time i start? For me this looks like the update fails everytime and isn't actually installed? But well, i guess it has it's reason. At least, the mistake is not from my side there :)

And about 1: for me it's a bit strange that there is a 4:3 HUD and a 16:9 HUD for the CF-Style, when the vanilla HUDs seem to work with any aspect ratio? Doesn't really make sense to me, or am i missing something? I'm still not sure which HUD and Cursor i'm going to use - i really love the Vanilla FL (And *definitely* wont change Trent or Juni :) ), but i also seem to like the crossfire style. Ah well, guess that's something i have to decide for myself :)
