Problem starting FL with crossfire

  • Hello to all, i am new to crossfire and i'm having problems getting it to play

I followed the installation instructions but i have the following problems

When i press 'Launch freelancer' in the FLMM 1.3 it starts the game itself and not the crossfire program that says start in single player or in multiplayer

Starting the game itself i get very small font. I tried uninstalling and restarting at every step but nothing changed. Also i tried many combatibility combinations but none proved different (I am on Vista)

Starting the launcher myself i get an error message that the cf_cl.dll is missing. Copying it from the original game exe folder removes the error, but the game crashes before starting no matter if i select single or multiplayer

    Thanks in advance.

    Solution

I had installed the mod in the "mods" folder of FLMM. I should have it installed in the FLMM directory itself to work correctly.
Thanks to Lost Heaven for noticing what i had done wrong.

    Cheers

  • if so then your installation is corrupt and you did not make sure that freelancer is 100% clean

  • Thank you for the reply

I havent played freelancer for some years now and in the meanwhile i have formated so i dont know how that can be.

Nevertheless i tried reinstalling, when uninstalling i chose to remove all saves screenshots and options and installed again, afterwards restarted the pc, then activated the addon, restarted the pc again

    Thanks in advance.

  • I tried starting the game unmodded to see if the text would be fine, which it was. Afterwards deleted the restart.fl and tried activating Crossfire again

I have all the mentioned above problems but starting the game without the updater (from the original freelancer.exe) the text has now no problems.
I suppose that running it once unmodded somehow made a difference, but i can only guess.

However down on the right it says '24/7 Crossfire v 1.0'
Does playing like this enable the mod content?
I do get loading bars with "Loading crossfire files" while playing through the intro

Trying to open the game through the crossfire freelancer.exe still results in a crash before the game starts, selecting to play single player.
Can it be a matter of missing the cf_cl.dll? Is the dll from the original game the same as the one it requests?
Btw i have downloaded the mod through the swat portal, at the version of 1.82, with a size of 1.5gb

    Thanks in advance.

  • Might be write-protection problem, try not using the program files folder for FL install.

CF uses modded freelancer.exe so using the original will only cause problems.

Small text is FL problem. (it's the odd way that FL installer 'installs' font, never really 'researched' it  )

  • Thank you Lost Heaven

I take it then that playing as mentioned above is different than playing the actual mod :( So i'm still at a loss on what to do

I have not installed the game in my program files folder and i've tried to remove any read only on the folders, though i doubt there was any since a "mod" folder does get created inside the game directory

For clarity's sake my paths are as following
D:\Games\Freelancer\Freelancer Mod Manager - for the FLMM
    D:\Games\Freelancer\Game - for the game

    Thanks in advance.

a "mod" folder does get created inside the game directory

ahem, FLMM1.3 must overwrite existing FL files not create a different folder inside.

To clarify it: You run the CF1.82 intaller. Set intall dir to D:\Games\Freelancer\Freelancer Mod Manager, run FLMM set Freelancer directory to D:\Games\Freelancer\Game, active the mod?

  • Thank you Lost Heaven for paying attention to details :p

I had installed the mod in the mods folder of the mod manager (sounds like it should make sense..)
Everything is working fine now :)

    Cheers

  • I had the same problem. You have an extra level of directories in your mod manager. In the mods folder of FLMM, it should be Crossfire182 or something, then the directories of EXE, DLLS, and DATA. If it has mods/Crossfire/EXE&DLLS&DATA or something of that nature, then it won't mod properly. There should only be one mods folder.
