Forms Of Measurement

  • Can anybody actually tell me what the measurement in Crossfire is? I figured the M stood for meters because when you reach a thousand, it becomes a KM.... However, no planet is that small.. Not even a moon.... So if the M stood for miles, and the speed, right of your health, stood also for miles, what is the time taken to travel that far? Is it just a measurement or is it actually distance divided by time. Also, if the M stood for miles, what would the K stand for? Kila-miles? Does anybody actually know, or have a decent theory?

    Only dead fish swim with the stream.
    Don't discuss with idiots. They only drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience there.

  • Mega? Millions of kilometres?

  • There are 2 ways of presenting space in-game: either you keep the real-feel, the planets are humongeous, the space is so vast, that it is impossible to travel anywhere at impulse speed and the only way of traveling on longer distances are FTL/Hyperspace/Subspace engines (like in Battlestar Galactica, Freespace, Star-Trek's Warp speeds, Star-Gate) or you present the space in the reduced form like here in Freelancer - planets are way to small, traveling thru solar systems on cruise engines takes minutes and so on.

    I would LOVE the whole Freelancer universe reworked to the real space dimensions with every planet scaled up and distances multiplyed many times with addition of FTL drives instead of cruise engines, but I fear that this is impossible to achieve by modding... :(

  • its not impossible but absolutly boring
    it would take months before you meet the first other player on the server

  • I have to disagree with you OP. There are strategical points in the world like stations and planets, that could be barricaded, defended or attacked. Disruptors could work the same they work now, but with a longer FTL disruption time. Jump length could be limited. There are many, many ways to implement such a feature with gain to MP and not loss. In every world I have mentioned above there was a way to find each other and you can't say no.

    But it's just my deeply incoherent with found Freelancer universe wish, based on my deep love to Freespace and some of the mentioned SF series.

  • i wonder if we can do like a hyperspace engine : you select a waypoint, activate cruise and you suddenly accelerate to 1000000 (enough to travel from one side of sol in 2 minutes i guess) ? too bad if you encounter mines/roids or space objects... (calculating waypoints is the key...)

    it would be cool to make an hyperspace mod like this (fully custom just to try ^^)

  • Technically better way would be to write it on the actual wormhole code, meaning: activating the jumpdrive would be creating JH effect for a second at your position (for observers) and you would be sucked into hyperspace tunnel just like going thru JH and JG. The biggest problem I see would be the navigation code - how would be the choosing of jump coordinates implemented? An additional waypoint marker in map & navs? Map appearing when FTL activated? Ahh... the possibilities and speculations...

  • @Verbose
    my statement is based on many years of experience with FL players... and im not wrong that often

    Arrow
    well yes... i simply say "it is possible and i could do that but i dont want to"

  • It only knows SA Orion.

    Ahhhh yes of course... :D

    M = Microns = ?

    Km = Kilo-microns = ???

    :D:D:D

    Well, at best theoretical calculation of the astronomical measurements and data, our actual solar system, Sol that we actually live in is 0.00189754306 light years wide, which comes out to 17,952,143,451 or nearly 18 billion km wide. Soooo... As you can see the measurements in FL even in the CF's Sol system's model and measure of scale is rather... Off. :D So yea, let's go with micron and kilo-microns, perhaps the Alliance and Coalitions systems unit of measure. :P;):roflmao:

    Oh yea, about the FL vs. real space comments... Well, you see how much it takes to create Sol and the bugs it introduces being a "mega solar system" within the FL engine... (i.e. ships "vibrate" horribly out near Pluto for starters) I guess Sovetskaya would be another example as well...

    Now imagine how much a workload it would be on the existing server with ALL of the current CF systems created on that scale. 8|8|8|

  • @Arrow&Orion Like I said: it might be possible with Freelancer engine, but it wouldn't work well. The engine is dated.

    @OP: you might have right here, I don't have even a small percent of your knowledge about administration of such server like this and clearly people from Freespace community hadn't have to dispute such problems, as every battle scene was a separate level. I think though that with careful planning and dedicated engine game close to the Freelancer and incorporating FTL drives would be possible and highly playable.

  • Hah, if I was right or not :thumbup: ... tnx for post Orion.

    Mr. Vebrose try to do speed dock in Murmansk planet ... too scary.
