  • I live in Norway and here about 98 per-cent of cars are manual.

The other 2 per-cent are mainly mercedes drivers, and old people who cant drive.

Why do americans drive automatics.....is it because they cant drive? Oh ye i drive a BMW not a truck i like to press the pedal and hear the roar :D

  • In my honest opinion... yeah there are times that I've seen ppl just drive slow then speed up once they hit a passing zone. I personaly think that everyone should learn how to drive with the stick shift before they switch over to auto.

    Sig Coming soon.

  • STICK4TEHWIN! I made a solemn vow to every car dealer I came in contact with about 2 years ago when I started shopping for a new truck that I wanted it to have manual transmission and I wouldn't settle for less... Even after this knucklehead salesmen at a local dealership tried to scam me into a wham-bam-thankyou-ma'am deal with a truck that had auto. SCREWWWWW THAT! FFFFUUUUUuuuuuu...

And I LUUUUUURRVE my new Chevy Colorado reg cab truck! Even though it's a 4-banger, it's a 2.8L engine(it's the second largest 4-cylinder engine ever made, next to it's upgraded 2.9L Atlas in-line engine cousin in the newer Colorados) so it's got just as much horsepower as some 6-cylinder engines w00t! (with killer MPG to boot, max recorded 30mpg on highway!) So many people nowadays barely know how to drive here in the US sadly Grand, let alone how to drive with a stick, so I consider it the ULTIMATE in anti-theft protection!:roflmao:

How much fuel does that waste, I mean, spend? :D

Personally, I don't own a car yet, but I want an Audi, preferably an A5, or in the case I win some kind of lottery, an S5. :D

  • From some webpage

    Quote

    The simple equations are:

    mpg = (km/lt) * 2.352
    km/lt = mpg * 0.425

Don't get me started on miles, gallons, feet and other crap, please, we use the SI system. :D

    That's 12.75 l per kilometer? Holy crap, that's a lot. City driving?

    |DP|Shock · |DP|Shockwave · |DP|Skyfall · |DP|Red.Dwarf

  • No, that's highway Shockwave, to be precise, I recorded that on a recent trip to the beach in southern Alabama where I took my truck. 8)

I think it gets closer to 23-25 in town with my driving... The actual EPA fuel economy ratings for my truck are:

    4 cyl, 2.8 L, 5-speed manual - 20 city / 27 highway

Oh yea, the Audis are nice, I've actually seen a few around here every once in a blue moon, they are rare though. :) Don't they make some cars with a 5-cylinder, or is it some other automaker in Europe I'm thinking about? The larger engines of the Colorado truck I drive are 5-cylinders and man, they pump out as much power as the most powerful 6-cylinders. :D:thumbup:

  • dream transmission : semi-automatic with paddle-shift on the steering wheel :) All this preferably with a silver arrow emblem in front of the hood ^^

  • 1 Liter petrol here is 2.3$ it bleeds my wallet dry but i dont care i drived like 170 km/t while chasing down the porce carrera that a friend from work drives.

    `

That car was fast.......the sound oO

    `

it was on a little used road away from the main road offc with long straightaways.

    `

But those Germans drive like 200 km/t on the autobahn evry day ...... [video]

  • Dammm.. if my car drink so much fuel i would buy an electrical bike.
1 l of gasoline in portugal is 1.45 €. that means your car spents 18 € for km. :cursing: :cursing: :cursing:
I would spent everyday around 1000€ of fuel to go to work....
    thats insane.... :P

  • Ugh, my bad - it's 12.75 km/l, not vice-versa.

You can't spend 12l on a single kilometer unless you literally spill gasoline on the road... :D

  • 99% of cars have manual shifts in France too... Auto is a quite expensive option here (the exact opposite of US hehe).

I am no mecanician, but having tried both types, I have the feeling you get much more response using manual
(drop down one gear for quick acceleration)which makes passing easier on short distances, and you can save on breaking disks
    decreasing gears to slow down.
It offers more driving styles in any case I think.

Although I must admit auto shifting is more comfortable (specially on highways), you may need more horsepower to be able to
correctly accelerate at any speed? needs to be confirmed as I am not sure... But if so it sure makes insurrance companies happy here lol

  • Because auto is evolution, spaceships are all auto.... so, bad luck :D

Also is why US have everything on auto... more evoluated, you need to know what manual is, but in theory :D Why to complicate the life with useless stuff :P Also learn to drive a 50's car, an F1 car, and be a drifting king before you drive your own car.

Also automatico nes live more... no crrckkkrck sounds breaking the engine while moving the stick(s) :D

better take a bike ! xD (for city transit). In mine, I arrive faster in bike than car.... but well, this in Spain.

No 150 L /day wasted, mroe trafic and less polution.... you world destroyers >:-D

    Orion, nice truck tho :D
Now plant a tree for each 10 L of fuel you used.... in about 5 lifes you might make it xD 8|

  • 7-th Gen. Euro Honda Accord (2003-2005) with auto transmission, Nuff said. I`m not a goddamn rally driver to need a manual transimssion.

And as for BMW`s... i`ve been saving up a lot of ordnance to rid my country of those coffins on wheels.

Assumption is the mother of all fuckups.

Being a Cynic isn't that bad. Either I'm right or I am pleasantly surprised.

  • Heh, thanks Michael! :D

Actually Michael, having an automatic transmission is good for in-city traffic and commuting that is very stop and go, whereas you'd probably burn up a clutch on a manual doing that crap in slow traffic all day.

Having a manual tranny however is good not only for fuel economy but also for more control over a vehicle as Faaby mentioned, you can downshift to slow yourself down instead of riding the break. Other benefits allow for instant shifting to lower gears for either passing cars or higher gears for lowering RPMs when cruising to conserve fuel. Also, when you learn the right shift points with a manual, you can ALWAYS nearly accelerate faster than a vehicle with a auto transmission, even if they have slightly more horsepower.(I've blown alot of fools off the line with big honking trucks that have auto trannys bahahahaha) The gear ratios, RPMs (RPM gauge is like mandatory on manual tranny vehicles as well IMHO) and overall torque(of which in-line engines have in spades) are the key to quick acceleration, but of course lots of horsepower always helps too! :D

  • Nothing is better in fuel economy than an automatic (or semi) hybrid modern car.... (except those full electrical ones but those do harder problems with the energy :P ), where lost energy (calories) is taken back to the energetic motor....
as the automatic way is also the healthiest for the car, nto exposing ti to too much acceleration at once, or pressure.... they live longer.

    What I need more... :P

Also, easier to take the car and the card, better. Why to study more for the same thing... :D

In this point, US rocks.... Europe will be like that soon.... when we'd be like that they will have automatic track multileveled streets, like in videogames lol

By then europeans will say why to follow a track and the car drive for you, while you can enjoy the "power" :D And US, simply drive. hehe

  • It all comes down to one thing: What do you use your car for?

1/ to go from point A to point B?
    This can suit:

    2/ to have fun?
    This can suit:

3/ to make people believe your a great pilot headed for the grocery store

    This can suit:

4/ to just be able to spend your billions and show off
    This can suit:

5/ You happen to be Spiky :girl_haha:
    This may suit:

But heck if I can figure out what this one is for!

  • Mike : if you hear a crrcckksound when shifting, it means you havent push the clutch pedal hard enough (not de-clutched). push harder and the stick will move into position without effort... Otherwise you'll burn the clutch in 10 km....

Faaby : What ? you dont know the super HIGH DOWNFORCE CAMPING TRUCK ??? :P i like the GTI btw it looks nice :)
