Today the Games Convention Online opened. The Games Convention is known since years as the biggest european gaming event. But this year is different. Already in 2008 announced was that there will be no Games Convention anymore since the numbers developers and publishers dropped with every year. Not a big surprise since more and more of them hold their own events just like Sony and other big publishers did in the past.
After the big success of last years Games Convention (I reported about it in 2008 ) and due to the still increasing numbers of visitors there had to be a solution for the GC.
Eventhough a new event (the Gamescon) was already planned the original GC had to survive with a new concept. Today the name addition "Online" shows the new direction that the "GCO" is going this year. An Event exclusivly for online games while the Gamescon will cover the "normal" business that once was covered by the GC.
For sure the current orientation of the GCO is nothing revolutionary as all the FPS and MMPORPG have been covered already in the past. Probably a few inovations going into the direction of online console games but something really "NEW" can not expected.
Many FPS and much World of Warcraft.
Still more than 70.000 visitors are expected in Leipzig from 31th july till 2nd august. Well I guess we will see soon enough if this new concept is going to be a success.
