The Eastern Coalition is the most powerful nation in the Sol System. The Eastern Coalition has just recovered from a long-term and devastating war with the Western Alliance, with casualties running into billions. Despite needing to fund extensive clean-up and reconstruction operations, as well as dealing with starvation and disease, the Coalition has largely recovered and is finally on the up-swing. The economy has suffered somewhat, but the Interim Military Government has begun to stimulate it once again with limited privatisation. The Coalition has colonies on the Moon, Mars, Europa, Io and bases around Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and Neptune.
The Eastern Coalition does not presently possess faster-than-light capabilities, and none of the humans from this system have ever left the solar system. An expedition of the CS Ramases took humans further than ever before, to the edge of the solar system, but they did not leave before being recalled.
At present, the Coalition government is funding two FTL projects.
The 'Warp Jumper' is a mobile, capital ship-mounted technology which opens up a subspace hole, which the ship can generate and travel through at will. However, recent tests proved disastrous as the test ship was crippled for a long period of time, and a subspace tear has been opened, forcing the Coalition government to quarantine the area indefinitely.
The second system, the 'Warp Gate', is a static wormhole generator. Although it has drawbacks (mainly, it is static and requires huge space-based facilities to run), it is proving to be more reliable in small-scale tests, and could be cheaper in the long-term. The government has given the team the go-ahead for the next stages of experimentation.
History
By 2012, The Russian Federation was being consistently hounded by Western nations to reform its democracy. Trade restrictions and even threats of armed incursions were made on a nearly daily basis, and a permanent embargo had been placed upon most of their goods except for oil. In 2034 it very nearly came to full-on nuclear war, as the Russian Premier used quasi-legal political manoeuvres to gain control of several Eastern European nations, forming the Russian Commonweath. Despite the populations of these countries generally having a 60-70% majority in favour of the merger, the West continued to press ever-harder for the Russians to relinquish control of these nations.
With tensions leaning close to war, the Russian Premier turned to China for assistance. By 2036, the Peoples Republic of China had become the new world superpower, and was continuing to grow. They had all-but eradicated most of the technological short-falls of their armed forces and whilst they still lacked the ability to move their entire armed forces, they could move more troops than any other nation on Earth. After some brief talks, China agreed to an alliance between the two countries. Shortly afterwards, Chinese troops, armour and aircraft could be seen in Russian bases along their Western border, and Chinese anti-missile defences were put in place.
The alliance continued to prosper, and Western political attacks diminished considerably. Most trade restrictions were removed, and peace seemed closer than before. Russia and China continued their talks, hoping to develop something more out of their alliance. On July 4th 2056, the two nations announced something quite surprising they had formed the Eastern Coalition. The two nations essentially acted as a whole. The Coalition overtook both NATO and the EU overnight in terms of economy and military capabilities. Most Far-East nations (which had mostly been annexed by China some years earlier anyway) and some independent Middle Eastern nations joined the same year, while several Eastern European nations joined the following year.
In 2061, the newly-formed Middle-Eastern Confederacy also joined the Eastern Coalition, along with parts of North Africa which had been annexed by their unified armies. The nations had united together into one cohesive entity in 2018, as the only way for them to survive Western aggression was for them to unite their peoples and resources. In doing this, they also recaptured three Western-conquered nations and liberated their peoples. In search of growth, they had also moved beyond Egypt and taken several North African nations.
In 2062, Pakistan successfully defeated India in a fully-fledged war, with Chinas assistance. A coalition of Western nations attempted to intervene, but they could not spare the resources to tackle such an overwhelming force. India fell within three years. Although the Indians launched several nuclear missiles at Pakistan as a last-ditch effort to drive them away, Chinese missile defence systems dealt with the antiquated missiles, and only one missile impacted. In 2065, to show their gratitude and to deter retaliatory measures from the West, the Pakistan-India Empire joined the Eastern Coalition.
Right up until 2066 the Coalition had been pushing Japan to join the Coalition. Everything from bribery to threats was used, but Japans heart was firmly placed in the West.
Several South American nations joined the Eastern Coalition over the years, in protest at their treatment at the hands of the West more than anything else. Coalition Civil Protection teams were immediately deployed, and used some questionable methods to begin stemming the flow of illegal activities.
By 2066, the West was extremely concerned by the increasing power of the Eastern-Coalition. In response, NATO was scrapped, and the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France and Japan became the founding members of the Western Alliance. This too operated as a whole, and directly challenged the Eastern Coalition for power at each opportunity. Over the next ten years, most of Europe, Australia, and parts of Africa joined them. By 2100, both the Eastern Coalition and the Western Alliance appeared to be on a par with each other, though the Eastern Coalition had access to more personnel.
For one hundred years, posturing and technological competition continued without open warfare, until the two powers moved into space. Moon and Mars colonies were the first to go up, and each alliance claimed ownership of different things. The Eastern Coalition claimed Venus and the extensive metal deposits there. The Western Alliance claimed Jupiter and all of its moons, despite never having sent a ship there, though this would cause problems later on.
The first problem came in 2128. The Lunar Conflict was the first official space war between the Alliance and the Coalition. Several early strike carriers on either side met in orbit of the Moon. Each side wanted to claim full ownership of the small rock, to propel their missions into space. Neither side was prepared to yield. Nearly 200 years of pent-up tensions exploded simultaneously in what was one of the bloodiest short-term wars of all human history. Carriers were destroyed and more came, with cruiser reinforcements. Ground forces were landed by both sides on the Moons surface to try and discretely take control of the world whilst the battle raged above. But both sides clashed there too, and there were civilian casualties.
The Lunar Conflict ended in 2130, with both sides signing territorial agreements in one of few neutral nations left on Earth Switzerland. Peace was maintained for several decades, with little more than colonial conflicts disturbing it. Still, the tensions remained, and the Lunar Conflict had given the Western Coalition an economical advantage that they were eager to exploit at every opportunity.
The more recent Europa Conflict of 2151 was inevitable. The Western Alliance had begun colonising two of the moons of Jupiter, with their key colony being Base Kennedy on Europa. The short war lasted for only one year, and was a decisive victory for the Alliance. The Coalition simply could not field ships at such an extreme range, when the Alliance had two bases in the same area. Without a foothold, the Coalition stood little chance. They began to focus on colonies further away, such as building bases in orbit of Neptune, and settling on some less-desirable moons of Saturn.
The very recent Great Sol War replaced World War Two as the most brutal conflict in their history. It was all begun by a plan seven years in the making. Admiral Kulov was the mastermind of the whole plan.
The Coalition called upon the Alliance to end many centuries of hostility between their member nations. After several years of intense negotiations and concessions, the two powers agreed to sign the Balma Treaty. The Coalition heralded the so-called Balma Treaty as the first, and best, hope for peace for all humanity, and truly convinced the Alliance that they wanted peace. As a show of their good faith, the Coalition were even prepared to meet on Europa to sign the treaty the place where they had been defeated so decisively nine years earlier.
Admiral Kulovs flagship arrived at Europa, apparently alone, and entered orbit of the small moon. Alliance fleets were standing down across Sol, as agreed previously. Coalition fleets appeared to do the same, although a mysterious increase in what appeared to be pirate activity was noted by Alliance fleets.
Just as an Alliance fighter went up to escort Kulov to Base Kennedy to sign the treaty, hundreds of prototype Basilisk fighters appeared from nowhere. The Coalition was demonstrating its latest technological innovation on a grand scale cloaking technology. The new class of medium fighters decloaked and laid waste to Europa in a surprise attack with support from the orbiting dreadnought.
Simultaneous to the attack on Europa, both the French and Italian fleets were obliterated in similar surprise attacks while they were standing down near Mars. Shortly afterwards, the Spanish, Canadian and Australian fleets were destroyed. By the time the Coalition forces located and engaged the remaining fleets, however, Alliance forces had discovered the plan and were mobilised.
The Alliance were heavily damaged; outnumbered and outgunned, they withdrew their forces to Neptune, in an endeavour known as Operation: Shield. Alliance forces protected merchant fleets as they followed with supplies. Once the Alliance had rescued all that they could, they began a counter-offensive.
For a time, it seemed that they were actually successful. Coalition and Alliance forces were neck-and-neck, and the Alliance managed to push their way right back to Saturn, destroying a Coalition experimental ion cannon platform codenamed Dark Reign in the process. Some Alliance forces even made it to Europa, but at that time Europa was a Coalition stronghold, and they could not break through.
For one hundred years, a devastating war was fought to a stalemate. The Alliance had begun using the shipyards and mines acquired when they gained Saturn and its moons to effectively construct fleets of small vessels quickly. Although they were insufficient to mount any sort of offensive action, they did hold back Coalition strikes for a time.
By 2258, however, the Alliance was worn down. In a completely unprecedented move, Alliance carriers actually began ramming Coalition colonies, in response to alleged barbarism on ex-Alliance colonies at the hands of the Coalition. Earth even sustained several direct hits from the massive craft, devastating the planet and causing the deaths of billions.
By the time the Alliance had finished their kamikaze campaign, almost 7 billion people had died as a result of the war, and both of their economies were crippled. The Coalition still had a handful of ships left, however, and used them. Their big-hitters had survived, and they strategically eliminated the few remaining Alliance battlegroups before hitting their bases. By early 2260, the Coalition controlled the whole system.
The war officially ended several months later (see this thread). Vasili Petrov, Commander in the Navy and leader of the ace fighter squadron The Black Guard, located one remaining Alliance base in Sols asteroid belt. By tracing the course of an Alliance Prowler, a small class of gunship, he found a mining base in the asteroid belt. The CS Stalin, the only carrier that was still intact, moved in to engage the asteroid base.
The ANS Washington, a Class 1 Alliance Strike Carrier, was also discovered before the Stalin could change course, however. Apart from engine damage, the massive strike carrier was still operative, and it engaged the surprised Stalin. A brutal fighter battle took place, but with the assistance of Commander Petrol, the Stalin successfully neutralised the Washingtons defences and hit her with bombers. The asteroid base followed shortly afterwards.
On December 17th, 2265, Admiral Yuhzov announced that the war was over, and that the evil Western Alliance had been defeated. The cost was enormous, however. Nearly every colony was in a state of ruin, with starvation rampant on every settled world. The Coalition reverted to communism, an economic ideal that had been present in both the main nations of the Coalition at some point in history, and slowly rebuilt the economy from only 100 million people.
At present, 2500, the economy has stabilised in a relatively strong state, though it is not growing very fast. Progressive social policies have largely stemmed the massive food and heathcare crises, and the population of just over 500 million survivors has grown to a much healthier 9 billion, although their quality of life is still not spectacular. The primary goals of the Coalitions temporary military leadership are now to rebuild Earth and the colonies. With the military fleet now up to a satisfactory strength, shipyards were turned to the task of constructing civilian merchantmen to re-establish supply lines.
A project to put humans outside of the solar system is also underway, with several projects currently showing signs of success. The Warp Gate project is currently considered the most promising by Coalition command, and has been given their support in the form of funding. A form of travel, known as a warp jump drive, was recently tested with dire results. Research continues.
It is expected that a sleeper ship launched some 40 years prior to this date should be arriving at its destination at this time, at a star system approximately 14 lightyears away from Sol. No communication is expected for the time being due to the extreme distance.
