how about installing windows on a second partition and use that for playing only?

Hmm had the same problem as Exiler. Tried uninstalling AVG, restarting, then re-installing without the linkscanner and updating - CF still seems to work (I can re-join at last! ).
After trolling through forums, best I can make out is that it has something to do with TDI layer protection in Vista, which apparently has only been implemented in AVG recently.

Daywalker has his HDD partitioned for CF, Im willing to bet he will post how to do this if someone asked him.

Try the linkscanner thing first... dual-booting is a tad inconvenient at times, and you don't really need Linkscanner unless you're in the habit of clicking on the first thing you see in google
Plus that would require me to locate my XP disc, no mean feat XD -
I got this problem today too. I eventually got to playt he game after hours of fideling with uninstalling avg, turning win firewall off, hurling my head at the wall, and reisntalling freelancer.
Finaly I got intot he game and talked to some very nice people before I decided to check out some stations. I noticed all the titles were showing IDS? rather than the item title (which I remember seeing when I tried out single player yesterday. So i decided I needed to remove all mods and start with clean install since all my missing around trying to get it to work.
Now I am back where I started with error message saying " I have internet issue or server stopped responding but yet the server stays live and updates the players online.
square one.
