LOAF recently found a nifty marketing prerelease snap of the Wing Commander 4 box. As the story
goes, the stark geometric pattern of the main box eventually gave way to a slipcase sleeve with a more action-oriented center. You can see in the shot below that this bears a fairly strong resemblance to the final design. The core art and even font are in place, but the lettering was repositioned a bunch before production. Note that it just says "Wing IV" on the side though!

…For almost three centuries, Squadron 88 delivered on its motto — “Stand and Deliver.” The squadron’s lineage goes back to the Second Tevarin War, though it didn’t see any action in that conflict. It has spent time along the Perry Line and, most famously, made the ultimate sacrifice during the Fall of Caliban. It was there the 88th earned its famous and fateful nickname “The Lost Squad.”
The 88th was formed in 2608 as the Tevarin military was pushing their way through the Empire for a second time. Their leader, Corath’Thal, was expertly using guerilla tactics to terrorize the Human public and force the UEE Navy to divide their more powerful military resources. In response, the Navy reorganized its ranks to better respond to the Tevarin’s asymmetrical warfare. It was as part of this restructuring that the 88th came into existence.

There have been a few known issues on AMD GPUs that we cannot pin down exactly to specific models or drivers. What we know is that when running AMD on open source drivers at least MESA 17.2 with LLVM 5 is required. We received a few reports indicating that proprietary AMD-GPU-Pro were working but were unable to confirm this.

…We've just released a new patch with more than 40 tweaks and bugfixes, quite a number of them are VR related. HOTAS/Joystick players will be pleased to hear that we've added an option that disables any in-game input smoothing.
Here's the complete list of changes:
Tweaks
- Extended the range of the non-VR screen percentage setting to 10-300
- Don't spawn old player wreck after current run was won
- Make sure generic repair mission can only be finished after task was received
- Made the PlayStation controller icons more legible
- HOTAS/Joystick: Added an option to disable smoothing of gamepad input (recommended, set in controls options)
- VR (Oculus): Set the mirror mode to be full-screen
- VR: Pause Menu can now also be entered via the "change camera" button (default: Y on Gamepad). This is due to SteamVR now opening the Steam Overlay when pressing the Start button.

…There has been widespread disquiet over recent reports that Thargoid ships have been encountered in the core systems.
The level of anxiety is exemplified by political spokesperson Councillor Rasmus Tseng, who said:
"For months now, communities in the core systems have been living in a state of fear, wondering which will be the next to be targeted. The Thargoids have been striking at starports in the region one by one, and nobody is able to stop them! Why are the powers doing so little? Where are our defences, our fleets? Surely the core systems cannot be so vulnerable?"
Admiral Aden Tanner, chief military liaison for Aegis, directly addressed these concerns:
"Reports that the Thargoids are encroaching upon the core systems en masse are grossly overstated. Although they have crossed the threshold, all we have seen so far are localised incidents in fringe systems. This is not a full-scale

Death^_ tipped us off about a really cool advertisement for Dragon Con 1996 posted by Wade Haddock. The sheet shows off the various celebrities that would be in attendance, including Mark Hamill! Note that this is not "Star Wars' Mark Hamill." In fact, Star Wars isn't mentioned at all, which is funny since this appeared in a Star Wars comic. He is simply billed as

…The Empire has announced plans to construct a new Riker-Class Prison Ship in the Veroklist system.
Once complete, the ship will house criminals who accepted a period of Imperial slavery in lieu of a jail sentence, but who have proved to be too dangerous or unstable for such corrective punishment.
The Moritasgus Imperial Corporation, which is overseeing the initiative, has placed an open order for Imperial slaves and non-lethal weapons, promising to reward pilots who deliver these commodities to Vaucouleurs Vision in the Veroklist system. The organisation has also placed a kill order on all ships on its wanted list, to ensure those contributing commodities to the campaign can do so safely.
Moritasgus Imperial Corporation spokesperson Superintendent Arnold Cochran released the following statement:
"We are pleased the Empire has awarded us this contract, and we look forward to the first ships

The Utopia campaign to construct a military installation in its home system has now concluded. Many traders delivered a huge quantity of construction material to Bobko City, which will be used to build defences for the Sim-Archive. Other independent pilots protected the operation by eliminating pirate vessels.
Utopia's spokesperson, Dr Leigh Constantinides, expressed her gratitude:
"On behalf of Utopia, I would like to thank everyone who worked so hard to support this project. We hope that this will safeguard the Sim-Archive for the benefit of all our descendants."
Pilots who contributed to the initiative can now collect their rewards from Bobko City in the Narri system.

…There’s not a single doubt that a substantial amount of pressure weight heavily on both BioWare and Electronic Arts to do well with the upcoming science fiction video game title, Anthem. After the mixed reception of Mass Effect: Andromeda, both companies have decided focused all their efforts to make Anthem the best “unlike anything you’ve played“. Boasting live features with a focus on story- and character-centric gameplay. Despite the anticipation for their latest project, EA’s chief financial officer Blake Jorgensen revealed their “conservative” approach.
Revealing a release month for Anthem in March 2019, Jorgensen stated that the “game will be shipped in the last quarter of the year, and in the last month of that quarter”. That implies several different ideas about EA’s approach, but EA doesn’t offer any official details beyond that. Perhaps they’re intent on pushing the release as far as

…Acclaimed game developer BioWare has been the creative force behind numerous huge franchises such as Mass Effect, Dragon Age, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, with each adventure presenting its own unique and expansive worlds to explore. However, recent years have seen fans grow worried of BioWare’s direction under EA, especially with the controversy surrounding last year’s Mass Effect: Andromeda.
With new concern mounting over the upcoming release of Anthem, BioWare head Casey Hudson has assured fans of the studio’s continued commitment to creating immersive worlds. He has done so in a recent blog post, saying:
