Here's a June-July 2001 issue of Teen People that catches up with Freddie Prinze Jr. that's complete with a two-page pinup of the superstar actor. We're highlighting it only for his single quote about the Wing Commander movie, which is an idea that has perhaps been expressed nowhere else, ever: "the animatronic creatures looked like Garfield." Freddie, no! The problem is they didn't look like Garfield.

Earlier this summer, we put together a quick 'atlas' of Wing Commander Academy that shows how consistent the locations are in each episode. Well, the natural next step is to take a look at the interstellar locations in the Wing Commander movie. You might be surprised by how much thought went into them… and just where they appear on our familiar map of the Wing Commander universe!

The film begins by explaining its geography. We open on a spectacular Pilgrim star map and travel via pan from the Sol System to Scylla and then to the Vega Sector and Charybdis as gold effects highlight the locations we'll see in the story ahead.

By looking at the entire map created for the introduction we can see that it conforms to the Wing Commander Universe map created for Wing Commander Prophecy! "Vukar Tag" is even visible as the camera pans across the map in the film, quite a distance for an idea from a tie-in novel to

The Independent Detention Foundation has thanked independent pilots who protected convict recovery efforts in the Redonesses system.
EVE-597 is back under Foundation control and all convicts on board been secured. Local system security also reported that the vast majority of escaped prisoners had been recovered and returned to custody.
A spokesperson for the Independent Detention Foundation confirmed that The Wallglass Investigations Agency had been appointed to establish how prisoners aboard the Riker-class prison ship were able to breach their cells in large numbers.
"Initial investigations have recovered partial telemetry from EVE-597's comms array. The breakout appeared to have been coordinated with support from inside the ship." Wallglass detective Eric Gunnarson said in a press statement to Vox Galactica. "It is too early to confirm whether the megaship's security data had been disclosed

Brewer Corporation is manufacturing what it calls 'jump satellites' to enable more fleet carriers to target a system with no planetary bodies.
Under existing circumstances, only one fleet carrier can remain stationary in a system of this type, preventing other carriers from targeting and continuing their journey.
"It's especially problematic for explorers in the furthest reaches of the galaxy where star density is at its lowest," remarked Brewer Corporation CEO Madelyn Teague in an interview with Vox Galactica.
"Brewer engineers successfully tested a significant modification to existing beacon amplification. Our prototypes were successful in mimicking the planetary body signal used by fleet carrier jump computers, helping carrier crews safely traverse to a location without a planet or moon present."
Teague's statement concluded with a call to action for independent pilots to deliver certain

Last month, AllTinker delighted us all by creating a pre-configured release of Origin FX that lets Wing Commander fans explore the oft-forgotten productivity package with a single click. But there's one more Wing Commander-adjacent piece to the puzzle!

In 1993, Origin included their only addon module for Origin FX on disk 8 of the first run of Strike Commander. This small addition adds a Strike Commander mode to Origin FX complete with new MIDIs and movie frames. Marketed as a "demo," the release also gives you the option of adding the new module to an existing Origin FX installation. You can download the Strike Commander module here.

The Strike Commander module looks for the diskette release of Strike Commander's GAMEFLOW.TRE file. It does not work with the much more common CD-ROM edition. We've put a copy online here. I've also put together an updated version of AllTinker's package with the Strike

Great news from the Portland Retro Gaming Expo: they've announced that this weekend's show will include The Fatman himself, Wing Commander composer George Sanger. He'll be appearing as part of a Sierra On-Line retrospective... but I bet he'd be willing to talk Wing Commander, too! If you're in the area, absolutely check it out; it should be a great time. You can buy tickets here.
