Thankfully I backed up my EXE folder before using Huor's file.
Now restored from backup -> Launched FL -> Saw "Trying to read update information" -> After a second it changed to progress bar -> Progress bar went to 100% -> Launcher appeared again -> I could start multiplayer (but server still offline).

For the first time in the history of mankind the CF 2.0 Launcher Updater worked without problems on my Windows XP system!!!
(It worked correctly, right??)

Edit: Nope Launcher Updater is 2.0.0.4 and Freelancer is 2.1.0.4... Now after restart they are fighting each other again...

Edit2: I killed Freelancer.exe in task manager, then the updater worked -> now I have Freelancer is 2.1.0.5 and Launcher Updater 2.0.0.4.
Versions are swapped with those in Huor's notice above, but I can start the game without problems \o/

Done, nothing changed.
But OP said in another thread that the server was offline (link), so Freelancer.exe from the attachment above is probably working correctly.

this version works, and Use low resolution is finally uncheckable (thanks!), but no server in list as well.

In my EXE folder there are 96 similar looking files named "update.dat.0", "update.dat.1", ..., "update.dat.95". Maybe they have something to do with the "Trying to read update information" message?

I read somewhere that PCIe 2.0 bandwidth is more than enough for all current graphic cards and also ones that come out in the nearest future, if you use them just for gaming (not calculations), so you don't need to worry about slot version at all.

My own PC has a PCIe 3.0 card (Sapphire Radeon HD 7750 Ultimate) in a 2.0 slot (ASUS P7P55D), haven't had any problems so far. Can do some benchmarks for you

By the way, what can become a bottleneck in your system is probably the CPU - AMD processors are known to be slower in games than Intel ones, especially if only 1 core is used, so in some cases your CPU might not be able to fully load such a powerful graphic card.

certain known examples of CD-proof ships are Liberty DN & Osiris, whereas Celestis, Inquisitor and Reliant are not proof for sure. Also from my experience all vanilla FL dreadnoughts can be fully or partially CD-proof, while all CF-introduced ones are most likely not CD-proof (but I'm not sure about Iteron).

A question to event managers: now that firepower is increased, can battleships be allowed at the event, not just dreadnoughts? (either 2 BS or 2 DN of course, not a mix)

Yes it is same for FAM-ng, thanks for pointing it out.
Also there might be a way to get real Multiplayer ID from these codes, but I won't be able to check it till next CF reinstall.

Catalyst settings work fine on my system in any game, I select "override application settings" for AA and also uncheck "use application settings" for anisotropic filtering before setting the needed values. But I'm using Windows XP while another OS may have a different Catalyst control center.

For me there is no use of Radeon Pro (link) because it requires Vista SP2 or higher, but you might want to give it a try as Catalyst replacement.

when comparing profit from trading vs podding, it is only worth getting a Soulforge train or Mining ship for trading (1st has the biggest cargo of all, 2nd is the most capacious ship that still doesn't have transports' docking limitations), but for the pleasure of flying you can of course buy a regular transport, just the profits won't be so great.

In either case, it's better to create a separate char and make its reputation neutral with all factions before getting a cargo ship.
