there is no need to worry about your download or file condition. Crossfire voice files indeed are clipped (I just checked in Adobe Audition), and also sound "harsh" compared to original dialogues due to poor recording & processing quality (that's normal since mod developers are not expected to own professional studio equipment).

After a quick research I think you can try to fix the sound by normalizing levels and then using an FFT filter to remove frequencies above 7500 Hz (that's what all original FL files are like). Saving the result requires some attention - output file must be an MP3 stream in a WAV container, and not all MP3 codecs are supported by Freelancer (Fraunhofer IIS encoder should work).

Besides I'm not sure how the anti-cheat system will react on your modified files if you try to play online, or whether such modification is even allowed by the mod's license agreement.

P.S. I was talking about *.wav files in DATA\AUDIO all the way.

I am doing well, being surprisingly short of free time even without CF and probably living a happier life than ever before - for various independent reasons and major changes that started last year. Anyway I can't wait to plunge into CF space again when the housing issue is resolved, but this is still a matter of weeks at best.

just wanted to report to Crossfire community that tomorrow I go to a place without internet and without my main PC for 2-3 months while our hostel is under repairs. This will be an awful long break from CF, but at least I will try to visit SWAT portal on occasion. (Probably not a big difference after all my inactivity last months, sorry about that too; first it was work, then exams, then packing & moving, and then "holidays" at home after which I now finally go back to university to have some rest and peace )
