critical crossfire crashing

I played this mod a long time ago and seeing all the progress that's been made I wanted to reinstall and do a fresh playthrough of this great mod! but i just can't get it to work.


So this is everything i have done so far. i installed the base game tried to run it but it wouldn't work so i installed the crossfire mod and it would load me to the menu i hit start game the cut scene would play for a little while then crash giving me this error.

So then i installed the game with all the patches 1.1 1.4 and Jason's Freelancer Patch v1.25 and it ran perfectly without the mod. So i just decided to try to add the crossfire mod to the fully patched version and i get the same crash with the same error code as before.


Then i did another fresh install of the base game made sure everything was running as admin with windows defender and firewall off and installed crossfire and ran it but keeps crashing in the same way and same spot as before.


I tried running in with vanilla shaders and it crashes while loading into the first cut scene after pressing play with the same error.


I tried running it in all the compatibility modes still same error.


I also made sure net framework 3.5 and DirectPlay was enabled in windows features.


So i really don't know what to do at this point any help would be greatly appreciated.


my specs are.

win 11 pro

AMD Ryzen 7 3700x

GeForce GTX 1660 super

16 GB ram




  • Crossfire does not work in combination with any of the patches since they are not error free. Everything they try to fix is already included in Crossfire.

    Only the original game (without any patches, not even the official 1.1 patch) is required to get Crossfire running.

    All so far reported crashes at the launch of the game either were related to shader options not being compatible with the hardware, leftover savegames that are not compatible with the mod or incomplete patched mod files.

    The last one can happen when there are access restrictions to the CF installation folder either by Windows or by 3rd party security tools.


    The code "[x]:Crossfire Exit - CODE 00000001" actually means that FL was closed normaly by the user or by an outside source. It is not a crash.

  • Maybe we can dig a bit deeper and see if there are any system logs.

    You can use eventviewer and search for the logs created for Freelancer during the time you experience such issues.

  • I have been doing some more work on it found a few more things that might be restricting access now I'm getting this error

    Still the same error codes in the event viewer though.
