nVidia, ATIt Again

  • It appears that the race for the graphics crown is on again for the two main rivals. nVidia's NV40 and ATI's R420, their latest project-wonders, are about to be unleashed upon the gaming world and the task facing each company is simple, be the first.

The latest news suggests that the NV40 taped out in late December, consider the average 4 months needed from that stage to actual shelf presence and we could have new nVidia boards by April 2004. It will however, be a race for nVidia to secure boards to display for this year's CeBit exhibition, a task made even more urgent by ATI's almost certain presence in Hannover, Germany.

It is also obvious that the exhibitions will serve as springboards which nVidia and ATI will use to promote their new chips. The physical presence of a board however, will convince everyone, including market traders, that the companies will meet their target shipping dates.

Although it does seem that the pressure is on both companies, we have to remember that the ball lies, squarely, in nVidia's court since ATI are currently the leaders in graphics performance, in gamer conscience at least. If both chips prove to be similar in performance, as experts seem to suggest, then ATI may get the time they need to narrow the gap from nVidia even further.

Only dead fish swim with the stream.
Don't discuss with idiots. They only drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience there.

    This is ten percent luck,
    Twenty percent skill,
Fifteen percent concentrated power of will,
    Five percent pleasure,
    Fifty percent pain,
And a hundred percent reason to remember the name!

  • The latest news is that the ATi R420-core is ready for mass production and they have beaten nVidia on releasedate.

I am looking forward to the first head to head of the top-end models of ATi and nVidia.

  • nvidia is developing a card with 16 pipelines, before it was 8x2

and this caught ati totally off gaurd,

    the fight is still on

  • somehow i still feel more trustedwith Nvidia cards

Had both brands a few times but the Nvidia cards just make a better impression on me so i am stuck on Nvidia

sorry ati... maybe you should start working on drivers that dont screw up the rest of the system

    meet me in space. :D

  • For the same reason I like to stick with ATi. I had a nvidia geforce 2, but i wasn't happy about the stability at all. So 2 years ago i switched to an ATi Radeon 8500 128 MB, because that time the ATi card was outperforming almost every nVidia card (only the 4600 was better, but also a lot more expensive) and I found nothing but good remarks on tweakers.net , a dutch hardware & software site. In november last year I switched to another ATi card, an 9600 Pro 128 MB, because the 8500 wasn't very good in Directx 9 games (ok, you can run them, but the graphics are so much better with a proper Directx 9-card. I hope I can use this card for another year or 2 before I have to switch again. But if I switch, it will be another ATi.

and ime still using it, nerver had any probs with the card.. also ime able to play any game exept dx2

  • I like to be able to play a game at 1024*768 with all options enabled. FL with low details at 600*480 is just......... ugly. 1280*1024 at full detail........ whow!

  • i have been a Geforce man all the time ive had a comp, but now i would switch to a high end radeon without a second thought. 9800XT is the best card available at the moment, the geforce FXs just arent as good

    Description
The intensity of the latest graphics squabble between nVidia and ATI, NV40/R420, seems to be entering a new chapter as 3DMark 03 scores are starting to circulate.
The much discussed and disputed benchmarking suite is re-entering the limelight as reports of stunning NV40 scores are beginning to appear.
It is strange how nVidia may hope to use 3DMark03, after the company claimed the software was not a reliable way of judging real-world graphics performance but the latest reports, suggesting scores of 12,535, may change all that. That particular score is rather impressive, considering that the best current score, using severe cooling and overclocking methods, just about passes the 10k barrier.

Both companies were busy at CeBit this year claiming that their new babies would pass 10k on 3DMark 03 but ATI seemed to be a bit more reserved, claiming that a 10k score would be a peak value rather than an average one.

The sources that claim nVidia's NV40 has reached the magnificent 12,535 score say that this was achieved using pre-production engineering samples of the chip but raise doubts as to the exact combination of drivers used in order to attain such dizzy heights.

Unfortunately nVidia's past record with that particular benchmark suite is not reliable enough for everyone to accept such figures without a pinch of salt and many experts suggest that 3DMark 03 is a sucker for nVidia's method of counting pipelines.

Even if most NV40s that reach retail cannot attain such a score it is becoming increasingly obvious that that particular chip may beat ATIs R420 but in order for that to become widely accepted we will have to see the whole industry accept 3DMark 03 as a reliable indicator of 3D graphics performance.
