Metorite News Inflation

  • I sometimes get a kick out of the way The news blows stuff out of proportion. I saw this on the news. "The rock meteorite detonated in the upper atmosphere with the force of 50 Hiroshima nuclear bombs". I like the way they used the word "Detonated" instead of broke apart, or disintergrated. And "50 Nuclear Bombs" Well Hummm.....LOL ;)

  • Yep, an atmospheric "detonation" of anything with the force of 50 hiroshima bombs would level several hundred miles/kilometers squared. This meteorite simply wasn't that big and "we" are lucky it didn't impact the ground directly, which would have potentially serious loss of life.
