  • SATA Samsung HD501LJ 500GB Hard drive dead as of 24/10/2012, rest in peace SATA Samsung HD501LJ 500GB Hard drive running from 2008.
It has served me well but its time has come to bugger off the face of the tech and earth world or maybe it got jealous of my newer hard drive and eventually died of embarrassment.XD.><

Yesterday the hard drive was running XBMC self contained Linux distro that was recently released, partitioned and installed fine.
Watching the mentalist season 2, went out and got back in also then tried copying media across as this was meant to be a media center on my spare old hard drive but nope started having copy errors eventually.
I thought it was a permission fault on the file and carried on as normal, then today the following happened,
No connection, it wasn't even found in the bios and I tried an old laptop sata drive as well with both the current sata cable and a new one.
No issues what so ever but this broken hard drive powers on and spins up kind of, me think the plates are screwed!!!

  • Hi,
I had the same problem with that type of hdd SATA Samsung HD501LJ 500GB ..About the same year I bought an external HDD 1 T (2 x 500G) with astronomical amount of 400 $.I was happy just 1 year because one of them had the same symptoms as yours.Because electronic interface which were mounted hdd`s only see 1 TB(something like RAID i suppose), i had to open the box and remove them one by one, check/format/repartitioning both separately. To that which was broken, I could not do anything besides low level format a small utility software from samsung. After 2-3 low level formatting and repartitioning, annoying devices began to show his 500GB again. And it works very well until today but only separately because I could not combine them back into that external hdd because the electronic interface did not want to see them again.Probably works with other software format as well, try from WD or Seagate, dunno. But I tell you, if hdd has an unusual mechanical noise, p0x is the best idea (sorry).Wish u good luck...

  • No mechanical noise, I think the Hard Drive keeps power cycling maybe.
I think I may just need to replace the drive control board, I hope that will work.

  • Weird, on my old table PC I had an 80GB HDD, last year I added a 500GB SATA one and few months later it started failing, then broke.
Edit: It did make a little mechanical noice when it suddenly stopped, and when it started again, but that was all.

I did had the right settings for the PC to read the type of the new HDD correctly.

Next time I'm skipping directly to the 2 TB ones.

  • It could just be the sata port on the Hard Drive is broken, so a new control board should do the trick.:)
Edit:lol I be damned the sata port or L-tab on the Hard Drive is broken, hmm time for some modding, uber geek style. lol.:D
