Are Missiles useless in Crossfire?

  • Hey All,

Long time lurker but first time poster :).. Have a general question about missiles..

Basically, are they worthwhile? Or what what point do they become worthwhile...

I'm a SP player person, so perhaps I'll never know the MP side of it (just the way I am, heh), but it seems to me, no matter how close I am to the enemy fighter, whether it's 300, 200 or even 100 meters away, the AI will naturally put that countermeasure right after my missile is launched, lol.

I'm still very very early in the game (in fact first time I've played Crossfire mod in like 4 years or so, so having a blast, heh) so right now all I've tried are Javelin, Stalker, Windstalker, and Slingshot missles, but all give the same result of being useless in my eyes. So I guess I would like to know is this really the case? Should I take on another Gun instead for the extra firepower and just avoid missles all together? (I heard Torps are worthwile and needed, so I won't avoid those, so no worries there) or do later on in the game do I get missles that actually are better in not always going after the countermeasure.

Naturally, I'm not the greatest player in the world, and I'll be the first to admit that, so if I'm doing something wrong with the strategy in terms of launching them, then I'm all ears, heh :).

    thanks everyone,

    MP

  • Hi and welcome to the portal and to CF :)

Missiles are worth having/using depending on the enemy you fight.
There are some opponents who are not worth using any missiles, on the other hand are some factions, where is quite supportive to have some missiles on board.

You should however always make sure that your enemy's shield is down before you try to hit with a missile. It's the most effective way.
Later in the SP game, you might discover some missile launcher which are much more stronger than those you can purchase. Just keep your eyes open for lootable wrecks, floating around in some systems.
When fighting enemies, you can also try to destroy their countermeasure dropper (with subtarget option) to make them loosing it.

In fact its all just a matter of tactics and practice. Don't give up and try different strategies. :)

    Good luck succeeding.

  • Hi mp84, it's interesting that your name is MP, but you will only play SP :)

And yeah, being a gunner can work most of the time, but there are some bigger fishes out there for which you will need some missiles, or torps.

Shooting missiles in front of the NPC while it's coming towards you should normally work, but well, others can't show you ways of how to use them while you are on SP, just to tell you.

  • gotcha thanks for the tips...

Alrighty I'll keep an eye out for the more interesting launchers and perhaps try to refine my tactics too down the line... The sub-target thing seems to be a nice idea, didn't think of that :).

    well thanks!

  • Welcome to CF, mp84!
Yes, missiles in CF MP are usefull, because most players use em to protect or to attack. As usual, many ppl try to combine guns and missiles.
Against npc missiles are useless - IMAO - because you could handle even with strongest npcs with nice gun set only. Missiles using against npcs will cost you about their high price. In pvp I try to use 6-9 missiles, assuming all launchers.

CF chars - Maxbur and derivatives
    Roleplay on server: Merc/Smuggler
You can hire me for all sort of job: dirty and not so - but I`ll make it clean. It will cost you :)
