No reason folks couldn't do both if they would stop spending hundreds of billions of $ to prepare to obliterate human life on our own planet. Periods of high funding for space programmes in the past have tended to be linked to state interest in military applications... such as for ICBMs or spy satellites. If it were really about discovery, progress, or even glory the funding would not have been gutted in the 1970s. If plans had gone ahead, I venture there would have been boots on Mars two decades ago. Nevertheless, happy New Year everyone! Welcome to 2010!
