Try my installation guide:
1--> Delete everything of Freelancer(saves , mods ,.. etc etc) / but first use the Control Panel to delete the game itself ... about the FLMM, go in the folder and unistall it from there(After the removal from the Control Panel)
2--> Use CCleaner or Advanced System Care to clean up your PC
3--> Restart your PC
4--> Install Freelancer
5--> Install Freelancer Mod Manager 1.31(Do NOT install 1.4 if you have it, ... 1.4 is bugged^^)
6--> Install the Crossfire Mod
7--> Open Freelancer Mod Manager and Activate Crossfire( And do NOT run anything else like songs , programs. etc etc. let the activation process to finish first!
8--> Multiplayer --> After the activation, you can install the CF Patch[if you want] (it's for Online-Multiplayer gaming, after that patch is installed, launch the Launcher and wait the updates to download. After they download, the Multiplayer Button will get active. After that, make an account and write down your Account ID/code. Without that code, you won't be able to access your account after a reinstall.9--> If you're running Windows Vista or Windows 7 , . after the installation, Righ Mouse Button on the CF Icon/Properties/Compatibility/Run this program for compatibility mode for: and then Run It Under Windows XP
10--> Enjoy & Good Luck^^

don't make it sound complicated cuz it ain't...
just wipe all (CF,FLMM,FL) and restart your PC...
after that simply install FL FLMM and CF1.8 to another drive (f.e. if it was c install do d) and that should be it
