CF in Ubuntu

  • So, about two weeks ago my windows vista died when I tried to install a new nvidia drivers (I have no idea why but it did) so I jumped ship to Ubuntu. Today I tried to install CF (in Wine 1.1.27) and it did not work. FL installs fine but for some odd reason CF just won't. Even FLMM works fine but I can't get freelancer to run after activating CF.

Anyone ever do this successfully before or have any tips?

  • Try to do a fresh install of everything. (Works most of the time for almost every problem)

Assumption is the mother of all fuckups.

  • Well, I have one last attempt. I read that fl works best with wine 1.0.1 (the version in the repos). I'm gonna reinstall in that and try again. I have a feeling that this should work because it seems that some mods can be used in wine (according to the AppDB) and also because I saw a post once by OP that said he wanted it to be usable in Linux.

  • Good luck ;)

  • Cool, I will probably try to install today or tomorrow so I will post my results when I'm done. Right now I really wish Microsoft would release the source code of FL so there would be a true linux port but...

  • Nah never gonna happen :( Even if microsoft goes bankrupt they still will leave their code proprietary, the code can be put in the basement to die off and for nobody to use, not that microsoft needs the source. Sad but sharing is for them like communism - something scary.

Agreed. Even though FL would benefit and the community would be thankful, M$ would never release the source for anything they make.

Btw, I made another attempt yesterday and, sad to say FL worked less well as it would not even pass the splash screen after adding some supposed "fixes" I found on another FL site. I'm still trying though.

  • I have a virtualbox installed, i'll check the performance of FL if i find the nerves to install windows XP or even 98 in it. My pc is fairly old thou so you might get different results.

  • So, new idea, today I'm going to try to install cf in a real windows xp system and and copy the program files folder to Wine. I've heard this works for something else and I have a good feeling about this.

    By the way,

Please, no thread hijacking, this is a thread for running CF in Linux and, once a way is found, helping those who want to follow this thread.

  • Thread hijacking... oh! sry it was a joke but wont it be classed more as spamming?
but anyway have you tried the duel boot installation where you select your OS then boot?
Havent tryed that with Linux but an idea to compensate for funny joke:D

  • Nitro you'll have to find all the registry entries and copy them to wine too.

  • if im on the same page as you... ouch! iv seen those reg entries before hope you didn't install to
much cuz that can be a pain Thinking of Regedit in WINDOWS directory; is the built in reg tool in
XP so... might be the same in vista as Microsoft try's to keep those things similar.

  • No hard feelings assault, that was more of a message for anyone who really did a full spam or hijack. Anyway, I used to dual boot but my windows crashed and I've had enough. I'm not gonna even consider buying a new copy until Windows 7 though because I've had enough with vista. Anyway, thanks for the suggestion on copying the registry keys, will do that when I make my attempt, I haven't had much time lately.

Windows7 is MUCH better than Windows Vista especially the Ultimate edition.
It also takes lesser RAM but has a lot more Windows Aero(or somthing) features

    meh.
