Just One Question

  • That's been bothering me for quite a while, but been reluctant to ask as I don't wish to offend.

Q/ Since WHEN does a compass work in space ?

Simple answer is, it doesn't as it requires a magnetic North to work.

Reason for this question is also simple, The Outcasts state that the Corsairs are to be restricted to the South.

The Zoners state that Freeport 10 requires supplies, "If the Outcasts will allow you to get that far North".

At Leon, we are told that Jump Holes are at points North, East and West.

At Planet Crete / Tripoli, we are told that the Corsairs at Cadiz are "Eastern", whilst the Corsairs at Crete / Tripoli are Western.

There are also references at California, Pittsburgh and even Walker states "Attack Group South".

Whilst this is sufficient in itself to doubt being space, there are other things to consider, Terraforming for instance:- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terraforming

    and

I've also researched many of the factions in this game.

Just thought I'd let you know a few facts.

So "see you in space" simply does not apply.

  • Mate.. you did realize, that this is a game, didnt you?

So you could also question, since when does a pilot reincarnate (appearing) at the last station he docked, when he got killed several systems away. Or, why does he come back at all, after dying?

OR, Since when can you switch your view to the outside of your ship, when you are flying from the inside?

OR, Since when can a ship (starflier) flying around and maneuver around without wings, after being in a fight ?

There are several things in any games, which are never be real, not even able to be compared to real facts.

Enjoy the game, and find out things by yourself, when some things npc's telling you, are not quite true, or right in any ways.

  • Also, there is such a thing has galactic north and south. It is used in astronomy.

Even on earth magnetism doesn't really define the north pole it just an the old tech we use to find it. True north and magnetic north are not the same thing. It is interesting to know that the magnetic north of the earth is a south magnetic pole (since the north pole of a magnet point north).

  • Not to mention a "Gyroscope" can serve as a means of navigation as well, provided there are at least 28 reference points, equal in distance from each other, positioned in a spherical map. But you must navigate within that sphere in order to be accurate.

Now you can go outside the nav area, provided you have two reference points on opposite sides of your navigation area so you can find your way back.

I can get into Astrophysics if you like.

  • A wee bit off topic, but it's at least some sort of physics:

Particle physics give me a Hadron.

    Muahahaha :d

  • Humans like to have a ready frame of reference for navigation, so even Cartesian coordinates are used in place of compass bearings, just as GPS systems now remove the need for a compass. Of course, as our propulsion & navigation systems continue to grow more sophisticated, we will need to begin to use more than 4 dimensions to locate a point in space-time, and arrive there in some semblance of "real time" with respect to the people we are communicating with in that locale...^^
