Lag out in space/connection

  • I am having issues with Freelancer online connectivity.

My problem begins when I try to log into a friend's server. When he starts the server I can log in, create a character, and enter the game in the start port. I can go to the bar/ship/dealer/commodities without issue. When I can do that, the issue becomes when I launch into space.

When I launch, what I think is the lag/disconnect icon begins to flash, usually once as orange and then the rest is red. During that time I cannot access any travel gates or leave the sub-section of the system I'm in. After about 30 seconds an error message states that I have lost connection either due to the server shutting down or my own network problems.

Additionally, when I try to reconnect to my friend's server after lagging out, or if his server has been up for a little while, I time out on trying to connect to his server. I have tested this by trying to connect to other servers with the same version/mod, and the scenerio repeats like the first example: Login, create character, sit in port, launch and lag out in space.

I am running Vista Home Premium 32bit.
I do not have currently and have not before installed the "blacklist" anti virus programs (Norton, McAffe, etc).
I am not running windows firewall and am using ZoneAlarm instead.
I have used CClean to check out the registry.
I can connect and play in my own hosted server, however my friends experience what I do when I try to connect to their servers.
I have tried a complete uninstall of all Freelancer related programs and reinstall.
[edit] I am running Freelancer as Admin.

We have come to the conclusion that something is wrong on my end, though we have no clue what it is.

  • It might have something to do with your zonealarm, a friend of mine irl had very similar problems when he used it, but the problems went away after he completely removed it. Apparently zonealarm has slight problems with a lot of online games, and frequently tries to stop them from playing correctly. Not sure if its the same in your case, but its something to look into.

  • Ok aslong as you have the most uptodate version of Zonealarm then that is not the problem as i have been trying it out for 3 weeks now using Vista and there is no issues....

What i would suggest you do is 1st make sure all your drivers are Uptodate IE Sound and Video card as i have had this problem your are explaining before due to an old driver also turn off the 3d sound as this can have the same effect.

With your friends server do i assume that you are not the only one connecting to it and that no one else has any problem?

  • I'm using the recent version of ZoneAlarm, as are my friends.

Updating the sound and video drivers did not solve the issue. AFAIK 3D sound is as disabled as I can get it within Freelancer, unless there's some backdoor absolute way to shut it down.

Slayer, you would be correct, it's me and two other guys at the moment. The one guy that usually has all the internet connection issues is for some wierd reason having none at all, and I being the one that can usually connect to everything we play is now the roadblock. They're not having any issues at all with online gameplay.
