Connections and game play

  • Recently the members of the Server Police have been closely monitoring players connections in an effort to keep the server "lag free" as possible.

We have noticed several players whose connections fluctuate terribly, sometimes in the hundreds of points, with high fluc scores.

Now we know some players don't care about the other players who DO want to play here cleanly and have fun.

So this is what we have been doing and will continue to do so until " you get it".

If your ping is fluctuating dramatically and your timing is jumping, we will ask you to reboot your router and pc, then come in game "clean". Yes we can tell if this was done by your connection information that the server receives.

If your connection continues to disturb the game play, we will work with you the best we can to help you "clean it up", since we have no interest in losing players.

Obviously players who choose not to cooperate will be dealt with through our Prison Colony that is currently being run by "little blue guys" with large rods...and they love to experiment^^

So we are suggesting that all players reboot their routers and PC's prior to logging on.

When you log out of game or the server reboots, please start CF from the launcher so all the files are updated properly, which also helps for smoother game play.

We hope all make an honest effort to make the gaming experience better for all.

  • Is it possible to put some sort of a system on server, which kicks players with high fluctuation and loss after f.e. 5 mins?
I mean, I know a few good m8s who have this prob, but sry, from CallOfDuty experience I am well aware that players with high ping and unstable ping cause problems to all players on server.

That system is called admins ;) Btw, there is a high-ping warning, but it doesn't kick anyone, otherwise americans wouldn't be able to play

  • Actually the lag kick can be set to the number desired. Lag for a player doesn't start until a ping of 250 or more. My ping is regularly 100 and I don't lag at all.

  • Let´s face it, Lag is something you can control - you just have to try it ;)

For those who do not permanently figure out how to get the last 0.1% Performance out of your Hardware i found some easy Tips in the net.

6 SIMPLE TIPS TO REDUCE LAG

Know thy self, know thy enemy. A thousand battles, a thousand victories. -- Sun Tzu.

The only way we can know our enemy is to study him. Yeah, thats right him. Lets start thinking of Lag not as an it, but rather as a fat, ugly, nasty, and disgusting monster that rears its head and ruins our games. Lets capitalize the L in his name, and give him the respect that an enemy of his caliber deserves -- Lag.

So how do we learn about Lag? The hard way is to study network traces and performance logs on your PC, and link each Lag you experience in a game to an event on your system or on the net. Does that sound like fun? Hell no! But fortunately somebody has already done it, and posted his findings on the causes of Lag for all to see. Check out the white paper written on the Causes of Lag by Bigfoot Networks CEO Harlan Tytus Beverly here (PDF). Its really interesting stuff!

Great! You read it! Most Lag is caused by the game server! A lot of good that does us, right? Wrong!!! Even though most of the Lag is caused by game servers, there are still things that we can do to minimize the Lag we experience. Now some of this may sound obvious, but lets face it wed all be better off if everybody followed these simple guidelines to reducing Lag. Here are EndLagNow.orgs top tips to taking control of your lag!

    1. CONNECT DIRECTLY TO THE NET
    LAG REDUCING TIP #1

Dont use a router, and for heavens sake dont use a switch! Plug the internet straight into your computer, because every time data hits a piece of hardware on the net your latency goes up. More latency could potentially mean more Lag. If you follow this tip, please make sure your computer is protected with a good firewall software when connected to the net.

    2. TURN OFF YOUR ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE
    LAG REDUCING TIP #2

We all hate viruses, but anti-virus software eats up valuable CPU cycles that could be spent helping you frag your enemy. Turn it off, and free up your processor to focus on the game. Don't forget to turn your anti-virus software back on or run regular scans when not playing!

    3. GET THE BEST CONNECTION YOU CAN
    LAG REDUCING TIP #3

The faster your ISP service is, the lower your latency will be. The lower your latency is, the less Lag youll experience.

    4. KILL UN-NEEDED APPLICATIONS
    LAG REDUCING TIP #4

If there are applications or background tasks running, its a sure bet that your machine is going to devote some CPU to it. Dont let it happen!!!!

    5. RUN SPYWARE CHECKS PERIODICALLY
    LAG REDUCING TIP #5

Nothing can slow down a machine like a good dose of Spyware. Dont let those murderous bastards who write Spyware ruin your game.

    6. TONE DOWN YOUR GRAPHICS SETTINGS
    LAG REDUCING TIP #6

This is a well known trick to improve system performance.

Got other ideas on how to educate ourselves on Lag? Know some other research that we should post? Submit it here.

For some of you this might be an old hat (it´s ok, you don´t need to post it then) - but this is for those who still have some problems and don´t know why, so leave this as no spam area and help those instead who are asking for help with your knowledge please.

    Thanks in advance.

  • Some of the points Daywalker posted (#4, #6) are for decreasing CPU/processing lag, not net lag -- two different things

Well then, if not ping kicks, thee should at least be those fluctuation over 10 and loss over 10 for example kick.
After 2-3 warnings to lower those stats, BOOM
Would be nice, and it would save the admins a lot of time :D , wouldnt it, GUNNY? ;)

  • Gunny is no admin - at least not yet ;) and there are really really less people with a fluct of 10

    back to Magnet:
CPU lag can cause network lag as well. As the network packets are calculated by the cpu. if there is delay then the packets have delay and then this is seen as lag in game...

  • Personally we all have fluc from time to time, but it's minimal. I have seen every player have a fluc of 1 or 2 at the same time depending on the server connection itself. But when people have 4 or higher individually, then something is going on on their end.

  • Question from the pc idiot (ME) again,
Does cpu lag have anything to due with power saving features in cpu's.....that is, when I'm playing how do I know if my cpu is throttling back or something like that....or does that matter at all?

What do you think will happen when the CPU is too active smarty-pants?

So - just post if someone ask as i requested it please, that will make it much more easy aswell if you would be so kind in helping instead of bombing usefull threads.

*this is not a spam or discussion thread for hardware freaks*

To make it more clear we are already out and asking and helping players to reduce the lag they have.

    Marauder
if u use xp you can just press ALT CONTROL and DELETE while doing so you can open the Task Manager. I don´t know the english translations for the tabs - probably it´s Application, Services, System Perfomance and Network.

on the Services Tab you can have a look how much cpu power in percent and how much memory is owned by the different services you are running. If you are playing CF your System should have a good percentage of CPU power free to use. Eventhough enough memory have to be free for usage. Means: if u have 1 Gig of Memory you have to substarct all the services Memory usage if u reach zero u still have ur Swapfile which is normaly 1 1/2 times as big as your physical memory but much slower because it´s on your HD. So it´s always good to have CF just running in your systems memory instead via the swapfile.

If a CPU power serving Tool is installed it will just take some memory but normaly just some cycles from the CPU for it´s own (Have a look to it like i wrote it above so you can be sure about it). It is only monitoring your CPU usage for the services you are running and will be active when idling appears. So - np.
