  • So I played free lancer when it first came out for a year or so... Then got hooked in the P2P mmo's (ffxi) and now I'm bored in my current mmo (wow) so I've decided to play this again (WAYYYY better then Eve). To my sadness I found out why I couldn't connect to the server list, so after some searching I found SWAT (and CF), so~ I've got everything loaded and working except the infamous "I'm sorry, but a connection cannot be established with that server." Any ideas?
Running Vista, no firewall (all turned off)
    Attempted to do this:

    • Close IE

worked for me for sometime. didn't need it for the last 2 months tho.

    Didn't work.

Single player works fine and I have uninstalled all files that deal with FL/Swat/CF and reinstalled in the order: FL > FLMM V1.37? > CF 1.7 > CF 1.7a, Got all the files downloaded in the CF start menu, but just no connection. Server status says it's running and there are 4 people on, so it doesn't appear to be server side. I've read a little of the forums and tried many things, but nothing has worked.

    So agian~ Any ideas?
Thanks for the help and I hope to join everyone soon!

  • Are you opening/ running 'As Administrator' ? That's usually necessary for playing Crossfire from a Vista platform.. I also have Vista OS and I always have to run it 'As Administrator'.. ;)

  • Yup, ran as admin and still nothing. I know what you mean though... I've gotta run a lot of things as admin to get it working (Ventrillo or mic wont work). But I set this as admin, both FL and the FLMM and it still wont connect.
I'm going to bed, hope someone might have an idea of whats going on tomorrow after work... ?(

  • you have listed several common errors in procedure. Read the CF Guide : www.swat-portal.com/portal/download/CFGuide.swf
A complete explanation is provided there...

  • Thanks for the link! Thats one thing I did not find. I've now tried that, but it still isn't connecting. :( One thing I have noticed is that FLMM isn't updating to the new version ?1.7? i believe. Tried to update it multiple times with the ways explained, but it's not working. Is there a direct link to download FLMM v1.7? Could that be the issue?

  • FLMM is the Freelancer Mod Manager and does not change Version, but stays V1.31

but at first start the CF Launcher needs an update to the current version.

if u do not see this after that update process

then ur update did not work. in this case end the CF Launcher ("quit") and start it again. watch if it shows any files to be downloaded. wait for the "Launch Crossfire Multiplayer" button gets activated. press it and wait for the game menu screen. then press "Exit the world of Crossfire" and answer that question with"Yes". now start the CF Launcher again and see if it has version number 1.6 (see above screenshot)

FL does not seem to connect on Vista if running Norton firewall. in this case it was said that AVG may be better.

  • See, this is what's caught me off guard.. I've done this, multiple times, and on the top it still says "v1.3" I guess thats why i'm woundering if there's a way to get the 1.6 version in a direct link, just because it doesn't seem to be updating for me. I have all security turned off and am running all FL/CF/SWAP files as administrator. I did read somewhere, forgot where, that I need the updated version of FLMM to connect to the server.

And Norton didn't come on my comp. and i will never load it. Don't like norton.

EDIT: Hagar~ I'm going to try to what that message by your ?avatar? reads. the "cf1.8 modding" and see if that works. Lotta steps and havn't done that. We'll see what happens. I'll try it tomorrow and let ya guys know if it works.. Been playing singleplayer CF and it's way awesome.. can't wait to join everyone in CF!

Only use FLMM 1.31; this launches the CF launcher, which is built-in to CF. The first time you launch CF (after a clean install), you have to let it load all the updates (this takes a while), click the "launch multiplayer" button, and wait till it gets to the FL options screen. Once you get there, you have to shut down CF and start over again, so the updates to the launcher can be installed. The CF launcher version 1.6 (there is no higher version) will show the next time you launch CF...

  • if you now have CF launcher v1.6, you have everything you need. Maybe check to see if your anti-virus is blocking it, otherwise, you may have just been unlucky, and tried to login during a server crash or restart... 8)
