I logged onto the server for the first time today, started on manhattan and bought the best ship/equipment sold there. I had no idea where I was supposed to go so I asked in system chat but got no responses. I decided to get a job in the bar and go do it. However, I get 220 ping to the server and hitting NPCs is ridiculously hard and random (I had lavablades). It took an hour to complete the first part of the mission, where I killed 4 rogues, then 30 minutes into the 2nd part (more rogues) the server crashed. The only time the rogues were "hittable" was when they stopped, turned around and did that shoot and ram thing... but half the time my lasers would just go through the model of the rogue ship, I'm assuming because of ping, but 220 ping isn't that bad considering most of the players here probably ping bad as well because there is only 1 server and thus 1 server location. Am I completely missing the point of this server or should I just give up and play SP?

a ping of 220 is not even close to the average ping of all players to the server.
my best guess is ~80 but ofc cant be sure at all.
how does your fluct look like? do you have a stable ping of 220 or does it jump pretty often? any packet loss? -

and ping is not important that much as loss is, if u have losses then it could be ur prob..
in any case ask any1 about anything online and u will get help i am sure...

Doing missions at low levels on CF is not easy... trading is a more boring, but much faster way to get a good ship...
But podhunting is still the way that makes most fun, at least for me
I for example bought the best ship I could for the start money.
At that time it was a barracuda from Kusari, if I remember correctly. Then I went back to NY, killed NPC´s, sold the escape pods, and got enough for an Eagle. Thats all.
There are many experienced players online, who can help you if you have problems or questions... feel free to ask...
About your ping... I never played with 200 yet, but as Ice said, if your loss is ok, everything schould be fine, or at least playable. -
my ping usually is 70, loss 1-2 in day and ping 35, loss 0 in night. tho my record has been ping 2000 [yes 2000]
