  • y not using standard windows defrag tool? it does the job. it uses windows scheduler too, so it's the best solution when it comes to compatibility.

if u have some good reasons, plz state them, cause, m8, there r only a few defragmenters for x64 version of windows and even those few r not so good.

it would have been much better if new server's os was based on x86 version rather than x64, regardless of processor, just because of compatibility. is there no possibility to ask for x86 version of system? it will run just the same on new server's hardware (maybe a bit slower, but not so much to b important or noticeable), and considering compatibility issues, it might b much better.

i have similar situations: my business partners usually buy new hardware to upgrade their network productivity without checking with me 1st (because they manage to get bargain prices somehow) and i am forced to reinstall windows back to x86 version just to keep compatibility checked, cause i don't want to deal with compatibility. moreover, difference in speed is unnoticeable, and there is no other reason for using unfinished and lacky x64 windows xp or 2003 instead of regulars. vista is out the question most of the times, ofc, but it's x64 version is ok comparing to earlier stuff.

i would suggest to switch to x86 at all costs if u have the possibility.

  • ok... those x64 versions of pre-vista windows r... lacky. and vista is not really a choice. but i guess it will work just fine.

how about defragmenter? gonna use the one from windows? it's ok, imo, not too many options, but does defragmenting (and has less trouble with locked files, moving them too, if possible under certain circumstances; like swap file).

  • the 64 bit system i use is more than just good
way better than the 32bit stuff

and the windows defrag is the worst shit that ms did create
there is a good reason why other companies wrote new defrag tools that are able to defrag on the fly and defrag by the needs of the pc (such as defrag by files which belong together or files which are used often... or .... .... .... )
    win defrag is absolutly ineffective

  • windows 2003 server x64 is almost as the same as windows xp profesional x64 in it's crappiness of compatibility with drivers and software. but anyway, if u think u will have no issues, i'm ok with that.

win defrag is not ms product. it's a lite version of some early version of diskeeper, and is quite crappy version of diskeeper, but does the job in most cases (not if u r a real perfectionist, thou, and u r, op).

anyway, here's what i have found to b good selection of reviews some time ago, and it has my vote.

now, it's up u to choose. jkdefrag is my choice too, but i like diskeeper better than o&o defrag, thou perfectdisk is the best commercial software imo.

  • if any defrag program is able to be used in a batch, there is the win command "at" to make it a scheduled one...

  • just to remind u: Win has a Scheduled Tasks feature from which you can launch basically everything (including command-line stuff) ;)

  • every program can be run from the command line in win. I dont know any program that cant ;)

No shareware means not no freeware? Or do you want to pay something for it - i guess no.

  • u r all right, ofc, but heagar has a point. if program doesn't have command parameters, win scheduler is useless, cause it can't make it work, only start, which is... useless. :D

  • O&O defrag is by far the slowest but also most thorough defrag there is.

Best server defrag or for machines that are runnin 24/7 :
    http://www.diskeeper.com/defrag.asp

Diskeeper is by far the most advanced solution (leading company in defrag) for any server i can think of to handle disk defragmentation. It supports any operating sys, so u can exlcude compatibility errors from your list. Theres a 30 day trial u can try, it sure is worth it ;)

    here you've got misunderstanding, m8:
shareware is like a trial, demo: you use it, use it, use it, BAM trial's over pay now or i'll stop working and call my big bro to kick ur ass
freeware is free all times: you use it, use it, use it, you die, your kid uses it, uses it, uses it, ur pc dies, ur kid gets a new one and dies

    kinda like that...
