MSINET problem

  • Hello all,

First I want to thank you all in advance for taking the time to read this and hopefully propose a solution to my problem.

After having Freelancer for years, and only now deciding to play again, I did some research and found that the Crossfire server seemed to suit me best.

    First, my setup.

    AMD Phenom
    ATI Radeon 1900xtx
    4GB RAM
    Vista home 32

I followed the instalation instructions presented in the guide, twice even, but I continue to get the same error.

The infamous MSINET.OCX is missing etc.

I read on several websites, including this one, that I need to register the file. Doing so in my Win32 file 'succedes' but the game still wont run. (this seems to be a common Vista problem)

Attempting to register the file in the Freelancer\exe folder gets me this:

    "The 'C:\Program' failed to load
Make sure the binary is stored etc.

The specified module cannot be found.

So I tried downloading and installing Visual Basic 6, then reinstalled the MM and Frelancer, with the same resualts.

Any help with this would be appreciated, and again, thank you for your time.

  • bad thing is: it does happen on some Vista installations and on some it does not...

since i don't own Vista (i use XP to develop the Launcher) i cannot help here, sorry.

  • that registering might be problematical since its done via command line

your FL directory (that one where you want to register the file) is in "C:\Program Files\"
sometimes dos commands have problems with spaces between words... interpreting the directoy as 2 parameters

u could try to install Freelancer somewhere else ... such as in "C:\Freelancer\"

if i need to guess most vista users which have FL installed there and want to register that file will run into this problem

yes, indeed. but only occasionally. the very first install ran smoothly, since then i have problems too.
i think as soon as i got my comp back i just get rid of the friggin' vista, go see my favourite comp geek and have him install XP instead :(

  • You could also try to execute FLMM.exe or CF setup as Admin AND activate compability mode XP or Win 2000 - It helped guys who had problems with FLMM, but I dont know how it is with CF Mod because it is a larger installation - Just try ;)

But you maybe need to reinstall Freelancer first before it works because CF needs a clean installation and after this problem it maybe isnt clean now...

    Use quotes (" "). Like

    Quote

    "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Freelancer blah blah blah"

    instead of

    Quote

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Freelancer blah blah blah

    Fix'd.

  • no manual registrations of msinet or installation of vb6 r needed. and plz, don't use compatibility settings.

u just have to start everything using 'run as administrator' from icon context menu. that includes both flmm, cf launcher and package installations. most of these things r good after 1st run with this option. in case of any errors, just use the option again. simple.

the problem in vista (with many software) is that admin accounts r not really admin accounts cause they don't have all required admin rights by default.

therefore, vista sux, and ppl should not use it for a few more years.

note: this manual is only for installation problems. for fl connection problems with vista, plz refer to vista troubleshooting guide.

notex2: vista sux, plz uninstall and install xp. tnx for thinking about supporters' peace of mind. :D

  • Alright, I tried to reinstall everything again, as was suggested, but under a simple one word filename.

THat was working fine, excpet that the Crossfire mod itself says there is an error after installing to the new path where the FLMM is, and the MM say the mod won't properly activate, and that it had trouble inspecting one of the mods.

Also, thanks for the 'run as administrator' setting idea. While nice in theory, it does nothing to help with this situation.

I have gotten Vista to work with every other game before, this is the one that has given me the most trouble.

EDIT: By the way, Freelancer now works fine, although it hasn't been touched by mods at all, this after just a fresh install.

I assume once I install the mods, I will have the same trouble as before.

I havent even regsvr32 the ocx yet.

  • Change your FL directory in FLMM settings to allow it to activate CF in the right folder ;)

    <table border="0" align="center" width="75%" height="40px" cellspacing="0"><tr>
    <td align="left" background="http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/9442/swatwj7.png" width="2px"></td>
    <td valign="top" align="center" width="100%" background="http://img182.imageshack.us/img182/401/swatya1.gif"><font face="serif" color="white" size="5">&#191;&#647;&#592;&#653;&#387;&#592;&#623; - magwat?</font></td>
    <td align="right" background="http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/6025/swatright.png" width="2px"></td>
    </tr></table>
    <!--<hr width="85%" />

    Fix'd.

  • Ah yes of course!

Now of course, FL has the ocx error, so I will try to register it now.

EDIT: Ok, now Freelancer doesnt work, with or without the mod.

I registered the ocx file, which was successful, but I continue to get the same error.

  • oO :(

  • Then you maybe have to try compability mode Win XP or Win 2000 - the only idea which i have to solve the problem...

btw, if you dont know, afaik with vista you have the right do "downgrade" to XP system for free

  • as i was saying, plz use 'run as administrator' for every step...
