  • eh, once again i have prooven to myself that im an idiot .. yeaaahhh, i managed to screw up my laptop

    here is what i did:
i got an e-mail from Toshiba that there are some new definitions to download for my notebook. as always, i downloaded those updates and installed them. one of the updates was the BIOS update (for Vista) ... (my notebok = Toshiba Satellite A200-1GH, with Vista)
anyway, my laptop still works. but my screen isnt showing anything .. not a programe running, not a single white spot ...

can plz anyone help me with this problem .. and if possible, i would like to save all my documents from before since few of them are important to me ...
is there any program or something with that i can finally start my laptop ... or any way to get it started :(:(

  • Mine did that a few times when I first got it, I have an Acer Aspire 9302. It did it intermittently, but usually a restart solved the problem. Also trying to power it up using the battery sometimes got the screen to kick in. On mine it had something to do with power saving, my laptop (for some reason) was cutting power to the screen to save power.

If the screen isn't coming on, but the laptop is running, maybe you can hit Tab when you boot it up, and (if you can remember the sequence of buttons) hit reset to fail-safe defaults.

if it does then press F8 before windows loads and select "Last Known Good Configuration" in the screen that should appear. that way the changes in windows should we reverted

if, as it seems, the screen doesnt works, then you have serious trouble, as it seems the bios update hasnt worked well...
in that case you should search your manual or ask tech support for restoring BIOS and pray for a dual bios in your motherboard

my advice is not to update the computer BIOS if the current version is working fine, as any failure in the update proccess can lead to almost irreversible damage

if the bios damage is confirmed and toshiba tech support doesnt solve your problem, get some bucks, find someone with some technical skill, and tell him to take a look at this site: http://www.arlabs.com/bioskit.htm

    good luck...

  • damn computers ;D sometimes they are so userunfriedly ;D

BTW f8 while booting is a good hint. i would at first try to start windows in a safty mode the top most selection...

I also would try to get to the BIOS configuration (mostly pressing DEL while boot). There select load fail safe. Or you can try to remove the CMOS battery for some moments - you reset your BIOS memory.

Also you can try to boot with a bootable linux live cd ;D if you are advanced enough - would not recommend it if you dont know anything about linux :D

  • try the function keys on your laptop - one may turn on screen as it may be off.

And if you dont get anything - even the bios loading etc. Then your BIOS has been flashed incorrectly and may need to be flashed again by Toshiba.

    Blaster

  • yeah! you could try a live CD to see if the prob is w/ windows or w/ hardware/bios

  • Thank God. I did not buy a Laptop. :P

I do not remember but there is stuff written in the manual where the laptop saves power and so the functions of the laptop may be inconsistent.

btw Inferno did you solve your problem ?;):P

    THE FASTEST ONE

  • Hi Inferno i have a laptopand if you shut down windows it does not shut the computer down it goes into standbuy.
I havent used it for while, but if i can remember you had to press and hold the power button down for a few seconds, then it would shut down , the resone for this was so you didnt loose eney work when you closed the lid, it word go into stand buy and i think thats whats happent to yours.
When you start yours press the power button and hold it for about 5 seconds .
    Hope this helps.

    {UAC}PRAXIS

  • no actually when u press&hold it, it's like pulling the plug on ur desktop PC. if u use vista, ur start menu button may be set to SLEEP instead of SHUT DOWN.

  • True Vista suck's, when I had Vista on my laptop, it was spending 800 Mg RAM whitout having any program running (only with the background stuff) O_o.

Whille XP only take's about 200 Mg with background stuff included.

I may switch to vista once I have 4 Gb Ram on it.
