I love a great background star map more than anything and while working on the recent Wing Commander Academy atlas post I took a hard look at one most people miss. During the briefing at the start of Lords of the Sky, Tolwyn presents information about Dioscuri on the series of wall screens instead of the holotank. As he walks around the room we can see that a large map stretches all the way around the room with various indicators (mostly x's and o's) that seem to represent contested star systems. There are also a number of visible labels! I've gone through and programmer art'd the dark red markings that I could pick out with a brighter green color. You can compare the captures below!

Some years ago, Andi Green found a great Wing Commander Easter egg in Ultima Underworld. This weekend, I decided I wanted to get some screenshots and figure out exactly where the Kilrathi graffiti is located. And thanks to Pix's save game archive, doing that wasn't too difficult! The graffiti is located on the deepest part of the Stygian Abyss, Level 8, towards the northwest corner. Here's the result, plus the in-game map to show the exact location:

Ultima Underworld was ported to the FM Towns, PC98, PlayStation and Windows Mobile… I'd be curious to see if/how this appears in those other versions! But probably not enough to do four nearly complete playthroughs of Ultima Underworld. But if you're interested in taking up that challenge, we'd love to hear from you!

(And yes, we know that it 'should' read Drakhai and not Drakhri; the former is the Kilrathi imperial guard and the latter is a type of fighter

A few weeks ago, we reported that Saffron Burrows, Wing Commander's Angel, would be guest starring in an upcoming episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. The episode in question turned out to be the season four premiere, Valles Marineris. We won't spoil it more than we have to, but it's a classic Trek outing! Burrows plays an alien ship captain who is sort of a war-weary counterpart to the Enterprise's Captain Pike. And she even gives a little speech that's pretty similar to her Wing Commander scene about having to shut out emotion to fight the enemy!

Our main connection to this film is the Wing Commander IV introduction which features a ship named Amadeus which is destroyed by Seether in a test of the flash-pak. The Amadeus is a Clarkson-class ship, the Confederation transport type introduced in Wing Commander III, which features medical segments instead of cargo pods. Its "class A" distress call says that it is an unarmed Confederation

We need a doctor! That's because today we thought it would be fun to look at the medical samples the TCS Midway intercepts from the Nephilim in Wing Commander Prophecy. It's the scene right before T'lan Meth E2 where Lt. Cmdr. Finley explains to Casey that the samples show "single nucleus, double-helix DNA, S-7 Ribosomes. I'd swear, if I didn't know any better, these were animal cytologic scans, er...tissue samples, Casey. Very thorough tissue samples, possibly human." We took a close look at the scene and found that the screen plays a 15-item loop consisting of 13 distinct images (two are repeats)... but we don't know enough about biology to make any sort of an educated guess as to their actual source!
