While i agree with OP, that it`s better to join in on a bigger project, I would suggest you try your hand in making a small mod with your friend, for a LAN game or something like that. Just so you learn the basics of modding. From what i can understand from your post, Son of Angmar, you don`t seem to have much of a clue of modding, let alone what you actually want in your mod.
Start with making 1-2 systems with fully working Bases & NPC`s on them & NPC encounters in space...
