This is really weird ...I play CF on old PC with Win XP and I don't have this type of problems. Here is one guide (in Czech) link or you can try install latest Visual basic from microsoft download &/or support. ... Or you can try pm OP, maybe he can help you m8.

Not spoiler advice: Follow game story first time. It is fun and you can not go into almost unsolvable situation. ..and you can acquire really good weapons before go to IC.
But if you really need lost fun DON'T forget:

This is waste your time. In MP your progress will be more quick and with few advices you can avoid many newbies mistakes. And follow story line in MP is also possible (and more fun as I know myself).

Okay, I'm done.
I've tried so many different strategies, weapons and equipment, and even different ships...the results are finally in...inner core hostile aliens killed 0...SP pilot killed 498.
Do you think there's room for improvement or do you think I should try medication when engaging these aliens?
I think I'll just go back to knitting socks for my friendly neighbourhood Nomads.
Yesterday I made visit hostile IC after some long time. ...Before I re-adapted from slow mowing Drones to "little" faster Dooms it was really pain Only when I have significantly increased maneuverability, improved estimate for aiming, and overall increased speed of reflexes, only then began to score better in my favor. But it took long time enough 
p.s.: It is good idea first go (or run if they disrupt you) in Weth and "save" and then go back and begin "training"

Hi, I can assure you, that C.Rogues are beatable in solo missions. ..I do many mission (50+) with my first char in MP (untagged) and it is a matter tactics, maneuvering and quick using nano/shield if needed.I do this mission even before I acquire guns from IC (use C.gatlings). ... this Missions was first, where I must learn use tricks with engine kill . After first encounter with this NPCs (when I was quickly killed :D) , I did in-depth searching SWAT forum about maneuvering, ship choice, equipment and how survive hard combat (Advice for Beginners). -
I noticed that the Ancients travel in packs of three. This makes attacking them very challenging.
hehe, So far you have not met a big pack of these. They can appear five (or maybe even six).
They are the most aggressive NPC's I've met yet, even more than the Nomads.
You can be sure, that in CF are even more deadlier NPCs. Drones are deadly opponents, but their agility and speed isn't so great as some other NPC. This is also their weak point.
It would be alot easier if the GMG command module had Batts and Botts to replenish your supply.
For this "feature" is highly important reason. I don't want spoil you future fun, so I only say that this is highly needed for game balance (especially in MP).
How did you manage to be successful against these pests?
Try more aggressive ship steering, running, experiment with engine kill, use missiles/torpedoes: equipment you choose for your ship is important for fight tactics with Drones.Advanced players can alone kill huge amount of drones, it is matter of experience. One from biggest fun this game is development own fighting tactics against different enemies. And also you can kill Drones with company, its more safe.
Moreover: Hellraiser is right, try first follow story line. It is fun and along that way you have time for gain experience in combat. Begin to learn fighting with a difficult opponent (example Drones), is not always the easiest way.

Just a note to the selling price of ships: From a certain point in the game (in MP it's sooner), money are no problem. Maybe that's the main reason why is selling price of the ship so low.

I apologize for the absence Admiral. Everything went according to plan, but the unexpected failure in the propulsion of the ship just before the mission was fatal and, despite all the efforts that could not be repaired quickly. Entering MP or not...is a question for all newcomers to decide, but like most SP's we feel that learning the mod and earning our wings first in SP is more comfortable and wiser than joining MP right away. Just my personal thoughts. At the moment I'm still undecided.
... I played very long time SP (bad internet connection). After I started to play MP (with release 1.8 ), I've never play SP more. MP is really something else and especially Crossfire is in MP even more different. -
Interesting. Today I have little problem with my NOD32 AV (version: 4.0.437.0) ... He did not like files from EXE2 directory: Freelancer.exe, nameresources.dll and sol.dll. and from audio folder file ambienteC.utf. I do exception for this and also take out freelancer from pasive web control. ... Game now runs faster. I keep an eye on that. Maybe this help people with slower PC.

It looks as you have problem with your CF installation.
First see this ..Guide for re-install Freelancer and install Crossfire ... I have old one core PC with older GK and I play MP without problems. I also after uninstall clean registry and restart PC.
Second (if you use Vista) look at this thread and read also sticked threads from "Freelancer Technical Prolems".I also hope that you download last version 1.81 from 25.01.2010. links
